General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. Remove all components not required for a minimal GUI

Server Core is great, and I intend to use it more and more, but I'd like for the GUI version to be as stripped down as possible.

Yes, Jeffrey, I know we should never use the GUI version except for RDS but reality is reality. People use it and it would benefit everyone if the GUI went on a diet.

I don't have any specifics in mind as to what should be removed. I'll leave that up to you all to figure out.

  2. GUI Choice for Administrators and Engineers

First, I have been supporting Microsft since Win 3.1 and NT 3.1, I am stating I am one of your longtime engineers and hope you will take my suggestion into consideration.

As an Administrator I access a lot of different areas that users do not. These areas are critical to my day to day oerations and help me keep your products in a good light. Recently, you have removed the control panel and our work arounds get removed with each update. As an engineer I realize that these tools are totally unecessary for the standard user, but critical to me.

  3. A simple way to manage Hyper-V checkpoints?

I am racking my brain over the complicated style Hyper-V utilizes checkpoints.

I just want to be able to delete all checkpoints for a vm so I can expand the hard disk, but I do not see any simple way of achieving this.

Turning off the vm still leaves the message under Settings informing you that you cannot edit the Hard Disk because there are checkpoints existing.

I cannot delete the checkpoints from their location because Hyper-V is running my other VMs.

  6. Screen: Scale and layout: PLEASE offer an individual scaling factor!

    Hello

We have many servers and almost always have Issues with the limitation for the Screen Scaling factors to 100%, 125%, … 225%.

Of course, we could use the Custom Scaling, but this setting is assigned to all Screens. VERY Annoying.

We're in 2018 and it would be very useful, if we could scale each single Monitor using a custom scaling factor.

    Thanks a lot, kind regards,
    Thomas

  9. Fix SourceAddress bug in Test-NetConnection cmdlet

Test-NetConnection does not ignore any IP that is marked SkipAsSource=True when showing the SourceAddress in the result. It will consider whatever IP is closest to the gateway address to be the source address even if that IP has SkipAsSource=true.

For example, given these IP bindings and a gateway address of 10.10.10.1, the SourceAddress should be 10.10.10.33 because it is the lowest address with SkipAsSource=False

    IPAddress SkipAsSource InterfaceIndex InterfaceAlias

    10.10.10.11 True 12 Production VLAN 123
    10.10.10.22 True 12 Production VLAN 123
    10.10.10.33 False 12 Production VLAN 123
    10.10.10.44 True 12 Production VLAN 123
    10.10.10.55 True 12 Production VLAN 123
    10.10.10.66 True…

  10. include a fully functioning command line print client which will print to a shared windows printer

include a fully functioning command line print client which will print to a shared windows printer, or a LPD server

We have the need to send PDFs to a printer via LPD - or some command line - during batch processing. The lpr command included in windows doesn't have the options to force jobs to print duplex. The print command is only for text jobs.
The printer understands PDFs natively... but we have no way of adding required control items on its way there.

  11. Microsoft window should include a feature called restore environment -

windows must have a feature like if a pc accidently shut down -for example like when battery issue in a pc- then pc shut down with a shock--
and when we turn it on again --we found our progress lost--so there should be a feature like chrome --Restore--than can restore the last environment we were working on -

  12. Behavior when task bar is at the top.

Still a problem with 2016 Server. This has been an issue for as long as Windows has existed. When the task bar is positioned at the top of the desktop, some title bars, like cmd and PowerShell, hide under the task bar. No, I do not use auto-hide nor will I, That is not a solution. The solution is for the open window to be aware that the task bar is there, and not position itself at the top of the desktop, under the task bar.

  14. DIR command should have a switch to choose if wildcards are associated with longnames or 8dot3 names.

DIR 1. will return "extra" results that don't make sense if you don't know about the underlying 8.3 names. When used with VBA, scripts, or other automated solutions this is problematic, as results are unexpected. If there was a switch to select, for example, that wildcards only apply to the longname, and this option could be selected from VBA, then this could be avoided.

  16. Double click group in permissions to open AD group

When modifying file permissions on a server, it would be a HUGE time saver if you could simply double click the group name and have it open the AD properties of the selected group.

Implementing this saves the time of having to open ADUC, then typing in the group name in search, then make the required group changes.

  18. I don't agree with the decision to remove the GUI from Server 1709 as an option. Some servers are for R&D.

I have set up production servers for Intel, and used an R&D and test server to develop new tools and to test configurations before I pushed them to production servers. As such, I needed the GUI tools and the GUI interface. Those machines were my primary work environment every day.

The Server should retain the option to install the GUI, as not every server is a production server.

  19. add functionality to Test-NetConnection cmdlet to trace a route to a remote TCP port

Test-NetConnection does not allow to trace to a remote TCP port.
The ability to do this would greatly improve Window's ability to troubleshoot difficult networking setups with multiple firewalls in between two connection points.
This is especially true, if the traceroute works but the actual port has been blocked in between somewhere.
