General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. GUI Choice for Administrators and Engineers

First, I have been supporting Microsft since Win 3.1 and NT 3.1, I am stating I am one of your longtime engineers and hope you will take my suggestion into consideration.

As an Administrator I access a lot of different areas that users do not. These areas are critical to my day to day oerations and help me keep your products in a good light. Recently, you have removed the control panel and our work arounds get removed with each update. As an engineer I realize that these tools are totally unecessary for the standard user, but critical to me.

  2. Remove GUI on all server editions completely.

We need leaner, faster, more secure servers.

  3. Screen: Scale and layout: PLEASE offer an individual scaling factor!

    Hello

We have many servers and almost always have Issues with the limitation for the Screen Scaling factors to 100%, 125%, … 225%.

Of course, we could use the Custom Scaling, but this setting is assigned to all Screens. VERY Annoying.

We're in 2018 and it would be very useful, if we could scale each single Monitor using a custom scaling factor.

    Thanks a lot, kind regards,
    Thomas

  4. quick access

Pinned locations on Quick Access shows folder name but cannot change display name to differentiate between many folders with the same name in different locations.
Please let us change the display name of a folder in the QuickAccess list as we previously could with the old Favourites list? Or let us put Favourites back on top of the windows explorer navigator?

  5. certmgr improvements (UX, etc) for finding certificates

Adjust columns as desired, by default have thumbprint viewable. Group by issuer would also be really great. A menu item to find a specific certificate by thumbprint, or all issued by that thumbprint.

  6. On Hyper-V hosts, warn before running destructive actions on host

When a Windows Server 2016 machine is a Hyper-V host, attempting to run system-wide destructive actions, such as sysprep, should be warned against more vocally than typical actions, such as shutdown. Such actions have far greater ramifications than mundane actions such as restart or shutdown. This will provide visual queues to administrators who are working directly on Hyper-V hosts and using the "Connect..." feature of Hyper-V Manager to open consoles to VMs on the host. Such destructive actions are frequently needed when building new VMs, but are very rarely needed on host machines.

  7. Make Windows 10\Office 2016 Searches as good as they were with on Windows 7\Office 2010

In Windows 7, Office 2010 I used to be able to search EVERYTHING that was indexed on my computer, files, emails, .psts, etc. INSTANTLY.

I have since been upgraded to Windows 10 and Office 2016 and the searches are a nightmare and very slow. I can only search emails while in Outlook 2016(no longer from Windows Search) and it is significantly slower than the searches on my old computer. Would like to have the ability to search EVERYTHING in my computer returned from Windows Search(Type Here to Search) since I regularly have to find old emails for customers.

  8. Improve file search

Extrano mucho el search de antes de w2008. Era realmente fácil buscar dentro de un archivo. Ahora sin los indices nada funciona

  9. Add IP Address Column to Print Management MMC - Printers View

Print Management MMC in Administrative Tools does not have the ability to add the IP Address of the printer as one of the columns to chose. It would be a big benefit to be able to see that.

  10. Unexpected Shutdown Event Tracker fails to save

After a crash, windows prompts the user to provide information on why the failure occurred. This is done at login via a prompt. In server 2019 with UAC enabled (for local admin, and prompt on secure desktop). The system will prompt on EVERY login and never goes away. Only by disabling UAC does the system 'save' the failure reason and no longer prompts on login.

  11. Fix the white frameless windows

The new UI design of making the windows white and windows without frames is a poor design decision.
If you try to counteract the white-everwhere look, and select the 'dark' theme, then you have a black title bar on the windows, and then you can't see the 'minimize, restore & close' options.

If you've got multiple 'native' server 2019 applications open, its very difficult to differentiate where the edges of the windows are - so much I've had premier support staff get caught out by it when on remote support calls.

If you run 'older' products such as SCCM, and…

  13. Windows Update Notifications/Nag Screen

PLEASE get rid of the "new" Windows Update notification that takes over the screen and makes you open the Settings app... the 2012r2 way (with a clear option to cancel) was better. We already know when our servers need updates but can't necessarily take them down for updates at that very moment.

  14. A simple way to manage Hyper-V checkpoints?

I am racking my brain over the complicated style Hyper-V utilizes checkpoints.

I just want to be able to delete all checkpoints for a vm so I can expand the hard disk, but I do not see any simple way of achieving this.

Turning off the vm still leaves the message under Settings informing you that you cannot edit the Hard Disk because there are checkpoints existing.

I cannot delete the checkpoints from their location because Hyper-V is running my other VMs.

  16. Microsoft window should include a feature called restore environment -

windows must have a feature like if a pc accidently shut down -for example like when battery issue in a pc- then pc shut down with a shock--
and when we turn it on again --we found our progress lost--so there should be a feature like chrome --Restore--than can restore the last environment we were working on -

  18. Add 'server-based personal desktop sessions' for RDS in the Server Manager or any other GUI

Currently, Server-based personal desktop sessions are still underrated. Still it has a lot of potential and a lot of users are looking for a way to implement this, assign users to different Terminal Servers manually istead of letting the load balancer do it for them.
Unfortunately to have this configured we are forced to use PowerShell, which is not handy at all times.

To make this more reliable and easy to manage; add Server-based personal desktops to be configurable within the Server Manager under Remote Desktop Services.

IT-staff will then be able to easily assign groups of users to different…

  19. Allow Virtual Desktops To Have Its Own Shortcuts

In Windows Server 2019, I love the idea of being abke to easily switch your desktop with one mouse click. Better Than the Button in Windows Server 2016 and 10. But What would be nice, is if in that Menu, you could make and empty Desktop and Add your own icons to it yourself. As Well as be able to move icons between desktops.
