General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  2. Windows Server 2016 Essentials Connector broken on Windows 10 1803

After upgrading a machine to Windows 10 1803 (build 17115) the Essentials Connector no longer connects to the server, does not run any of the apps and deinstallation/reinstallation including fresh install clearing down registry and ProgramData does not fix it. This will block upgrading my estate to Windows 10 1803 if not fixed urgently. Have also reported back through Feedback App on Windows 10.

  3. Make Server Essentials 2016 Connector More Robust to Windows Upgrades

The Server Essentials Connector client often loses its connection to the server following a Windows Update. This is both frustrating if seen, or an issue if missed (if the icon is not always shown) as it can lead to backups not happening for a number of days. Normally it is then just a case of running the ClientDeploy app, but you have to know where to find this (it is not added to the all programs list).

Ideally the connector should be much more robust to Windows Updates and should simply "just work" but, if it does not connect it…

  6. ...

Still no support for RemoteFX (using GPU and OpenCL), and Enhanced Session mode in Linux guests via the "hvbus" linux driver, and xrdp on Linux is still difficult to reach in GEN2 guests.
    The "hyperv
fb" device for framebuffer is really too slow and very unfriendly (need to tweak the GRUB boot config to specify the resolution, not needed in Windows guests over Hyper-V, or any guests in Oracle VirtualBox whose virtual display driver over its VMbus supports the detection and dynamic change of multiple resolutions, by just resizing its own VMconnect client).
Working with Linux guests on Hyper-V…

  8. Windows Server 2016 Essentials (or "edition" + Essentials) needs to support Windows 10 1709

After upgrading my Windows 10 Pro 1703 to 1709, the Essentials connector was de-installed and I'm no longer able to run the installer.

Please update Windows Server 2016 Essentials to support Windows 10 1709.

  9. Make hyper-v integration services update work for none internet connected servers and VM's. Publish the IS KB's for download

Hyper-V Servers or VM's that are not able to get to the internet Microsoft Windows Update Server are not able to get the Integration Services updates. We need a PowerShell way to be able to check to see what Integration Services version is installed like we had (Get-vm -ComputerName $Env:computername | ft ComputerName,Name,State,IntegrationServicesVersion,IntegrationServicesState

) and a way to update them with a KB update.

  10. iMessage alternative

I feel that Microsoft should add their own "iMessage" on to their Surface line (and possibly Xbox so I could text on it). Microsoft could team up with Samsung and have it sync messages through mobile, console, PC. Thank you

  12. Support DirectAccess in Azure

As more companies look at the cloud for their disaster recovery (or primary site) it would be nice to be able to deploy DirectAccess in Azure. I currently have a scenario where DirectAccess in Azure would win over a cloud solution today.

  13. notepad should support files without carriage returns

It would be very useful and helpful to have better line ending support in Notepad.
Third party software often comes with config files that's origin is from a Linux world and only having LF inside.
Notepad just shows one big line and editing such files is almost impossible.
As WordPad supports LF since years it would be that feature to have notepad.exe be aware of CRLF and LF files.

  15. support nvidia vgpu

Please add vGPU support for modern Tesla GPU virtualization. RemoteFX doesn't quite cut it, and we shouldn't have to add even more third party apps ( Citrix / VMware) just to fully utilize our hardware.

  17. Provide Service Fabric as a Native Feature

The tools for installing Service Fabric are really good, but if it was an optional native feature, it would help to create a Windows Server 2019 image with it enabled "from the start" via the features XML.

  18. Make LACP NIC teaming comply with LACP standard for NIC speeds (all same)

Currently LBFO using LACP allows the NICs to renegotiate to different speeds which is not allowed in LACP standard.

We've just had a 4 x 1Gb LACP team change to a 3 x 1Gb + 1 x 100 Mb team. LACP requires all link speeds are the same. If NIC was unable to stay at 1Gb, it should have been faulted and dropped from team. Allowing one NIC to drop to 100Mb reduced effective link speed to 100Mb. Gigabit standard requires (?) autonegotiation of individual link speeds - but LBFO should ensure compliance of team with LACP standard. This occurred…

  19. Fix Remote Desktop URI scheme

Full Disclosure: I'm the guy who added the URI parsing and connection scheme in CoRD. That was a feature I wanted, so I baked it when I started contributing to the development of the app 10 years ago. https://github.com/dorianj/CoRD/wiki/Command-Line-Use

The Current URI scheme looks like it was written by interns with no supervision. Either your engineers completely ignored RFC 3986, or they thought they were more clever than they really are. Chief among the trespasses is the lack of ability to use the hostname/IP address baked into the scheme, requiring the use of the "full address" parameter, which for some…

  20. Social Live Stream (Multi Media Consule)

Everyone can join in on a game now at days (XBOX) how about non-gamers being able to join in on the same movie, music, sports or presentation.
Target: Business, families, and gamers in one consule. Maybe even Online gambling: horses races, bingo, sports...
All on one Microsoft account that will be taking everyone's money.
