General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

  1. vmconnect.exe and Grant-VMConnectAccess

The Cmdlet Grant-VMConnectAccess provides a good service in that it allows you to grant Access to a VM to a specific user without giving them full access to ALL vm's and Network control on the machine. User's need VMConnect.exe to talk to VM's but it does not respect this change. Please update VMConnect.exe to respect and use this rights change. It should be able to talk directly to the VM if the rights are there and the machinename or Guid of the VM is targeted

  2. Include support for Group Managed Service Accounts in Task Scheduler GUI

The GUI does not accept entering a gMSA as user for a scheduled task. This can only be done from PowerShell, and after doing that it is not possible to edit the task from GUI.

I would love to see gMSA support in the scheduled tasks GUI.

  3. Change Your Thinking

I recently downloaded Server 2016 from my VL portal, got it installed/configured for testing, and I just thought I would share my discontent with the product (or unimpressed is likely a better wording). This does not require any input from anyone, or have any questions that need to be answered.

I dislike that they removed the ability to convert from GUI to Core, or Core to GUI. That was a great feature! Sorry I am not a PowerShell guru, but these feature allowed me to be flexible. Add this back in! I read your reasoning online. Find a way to…

  4. Dedupe on ReFS and Hyper-V non-VDI scenarioes...

Please please please add support for Dedupe on ReFS volumes! If you want us to start using the new filesystem then you really should implement Dedupe as well. Also support for Dedupe on other than VDI loads would really be nice. It works very well, so why not??

  5. Disable logon screen background image by default

On Windows Server 2016 Eval (with Desktop Experience), the background image of logon screen is enabled by default.

I feel it would be better to disable by default than to enable.I think such a feature is not needed on the server product and it's better to be simple and to minimize resources for non-service.

  6. Finally, please describe for each executable (standalone & services) it's necessity to access the Internet

    This is a security issue.

    Hello

It's really strange that we use operating systems which do not describe its executables and their eligibility to access the internet.

If we monitor which programms access the internet on a Windows Machine, then we really often have to google for its executable name and just get informations like "we do'nt know what it does, but it is probably safe to allow internet access".

    Therefore, please:
    1) Finally, create a professional application & service architecture. No, to route everything over svchost.exe is not a secure design. Not at all.

    2) Finally, create a datasheet…

  7. Server : Time Zone change log.

    Hi,

When we change the system time zone,
It would be logged in System Log:
    Event id 1:
    Source : Kernel-General.

    Details :
The system time has changed to ‎2017‎-‎03‎-‎30T07:02:56.704492900Z from ‎2017‎-‎03‎-‎30T07:02:56.704492900Z.

Change Reason: System time adjusted to the new time zone.

    Issue:
The New time and the Old time are the same in the details which will not help much to know from which timezone it had been changed from .

  8. Run group policy update silently when run from Group Policy Management

On Server 2012 when running Group Policy Update from within the Group Policy Management Console the update runs interactive on the targeted systems. This makes the feature pretty much obsolete as you can't run a group policy update in real time urgently if it means the perception of interfering with end users.

  9. CEP/CES installation requires Enterprise Admins membership

The scenario is installation of CEP/CES (both are part of Windows AD Certificate Services role) and the problem is that this installation requires membership in either Enterprise Admins or root Domain Admins groups.
Would like to suggest to remove this hard coded requirement and provide normal delegation options where we can exactly provide to the installation user account minimum rights for performing CEP/CES installation.

  10. Robocopy - exclude files and directories

Robocopy.exe is great tool, but it have one really stupid thing. In command line I can add list of excluded files (param /XF file1 file2 ...filex) and directories param /XD dir1 ...dirx). Great! BUT when I have lot of files (or dirs) for exclude its really not comfortable to write lot of filenames to command line (or into batch file). And command line has limit 2048 characters. its so big problem add param for example /XDFILE:list.txt for read excluded directories from file list.txt? (and for files something similar)

  11. Allow option to have more detailed taskbar icons

The taskbar should have an option where a person can choose to have a taskbar that has more detailed information about the open windows and applications. Although the collapsed multiple windows of an application (think 2+ chrome windows open that are cascaded behind the chrome logo) offers a cleaner look, it's a hassle to have to click on the chrome logo, see the multiple windows pop up, then select the one you want. It would be more streamlined to just have the thumbnails constantly up, even if the taskbar has to get a little larger.

  12. add ability to login to user profiles without needing their password.

Since we already have the power as an admin to reset a users password, why can't we have the option to login to their user profile without needing to change it? There has been countless times where I've had to ask them for their password so I can login to their profile to set things up. If there was a way to login to their user profile without resetting their password, then I wouldn't have to ask them for their password.

  13. Microsoft Remote Desktop V10 for MAC keyboard changes when laptop sleeps and is brought back up

On my Macbook Pro, since I installed the latest Microsoft Remote Desktop V10, if I put the Mac to sleep and come back, keystrokes change from normal keystrokes to function keys. For instance the "d" key, instead of typing a "d" now toggles the show desktop on and off. In order to get the keyboard back I have to "Sign off" the Remote Desktop and Sign back in. Is there a setting to fix this as this defeats the purpose of using a Remote Desktop to preserve something you are working on.

Mac OS = High Sierra Version 10.13.6.

  14. Routing traffice based on port

Assume a scenario where we have 2 NICs, eth1 and eth2. eth1 has the IP address 1.1.1.1 and eth2 has 2.2.2.2. Using 1.1.1.254 as gateway would route all Internet traffic through eth1, while having 2.2.2.254 as gateway would route traffic through eth2.

Assume we want traffic to IP address 5.5.5.5 and port 80 to be processed by one route using eth1, while traffic to the same IP address on port 443 should be processed by route using eth2.

In linux we have this ability by using route tables and iptables

ip route add table 10 0.0.0.0/0 via 1.1.1.254
    ip route…

  18. phone-tablet

I have come up with a great idea but need to attached a document (this idea could really bring microsoft to next stage of future technology of the tablet, that would lead the way to another product that will dominate the market place

what if you could design a tablet for your phone to connect via wirelessly or by usb and everything be mirrored from your mobile to your tablet, so you could in theory surf the web on your tablet via your phone and on your tablet access all your apps photos, videos and more. Turning and integrating you…
