General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Mac version 10

Previous versions of RDP for Mac stored passwords in the keychain. Please return to this method. If not, you need to at least give users a method to retrieve a password
    I LOVE Mac RDP v 10, but that's a dealbreaker. I'm going back to v8

  2. Server 2016 not installing updates at the scheduled time set via Group Policy. Cumulative updates always fail with 0x800705b4.

Server 2016 not installing updates at the scheduled time set via Group Policy. Cumulative updates always fail with 0x800705b4.

It takes FOREVER, but if I manually download the update, it will install. If I had one server, I'd say it's my problem, but every server 2016 server I've deployed has this problem. What gives!?!?!

  3. [WSFC - CNO] ::: Provision to change the ManagementPointNetworkType of an existing Cluster i.e. between Singleton & Distributed

It’s about making an enhancement on the new feature ManagementPointNetworkType introduced in RS3 which will improve Cluster Connectivity from the behavior what we see today.

History: Until RS3, this wasn’t configurable & the cluster’s CNO will be what’s created using MPNT as Singleton. RS3 onwards this can be set as Distributed.
    You’ll ask: What's the difference?
A CNO of type Singleton needs an IP address while the Distributed ones don’t. This is a boon for the AZURE based WSFC deployments, which are currently using 169.254.x.y and are useless for any remote connections or anything but taking space in AD otherwise…

  5. ADFS WID Port 80 Requirement

ADFS WID replication requires port 80 to be open. This is not outlined anywhere in this document: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/deployment/best-practices-securing-ad-fs

    It is outlined here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/adfs/set-adfssyncproperties?view=win10-ps

"Note: The primary server must be accessible via HTTP on port 80 from the secondary server."

Please add this note to the best practices document.

  6. Windows Setup in a boot from SAN

Permanent fix for Boot from SAN when there are multiple paths to the Boot LUN. There is a workaround mentioned in below article but this is preventing us from fully automating windows setup.

  7. Need the probably last audit setting for 'Service Control Manager'

    Hi Team,

The Service Control Manager audits all service related events except the deletion in the event viewer.
Probably the last thing that could be added?

    Thank you.

  10. Provide a guide on what rights are necessary for working in RDS in the "least privilege" model.

Provide a guide on what rights are necessary for working in RDS in the "least privilege" model. Giving technicians ability to shadow end users or publish applications without being admins of the server.

  12. [ADFS2019] Allow custom themes per application group

Implement a command like Set-AdfsRelyingPartyWebTheme but for Application Groups.
Currently it is not possible to define a theme per application group.

  15. Disable Network Interface Card Confirmation Dialog

I had a funny scenario where, in the middle of a presentation, while connected remotely to a server, I disabled the interface card and lost connection to my server.
That happened while I was demonstrating the network card configuration -(LOL).

What about creating a confirmation popup before disabling the network card via RDP? :)

    Vote for a better Windows!

  16. Allow FSRM passive screens on drive with SYSVOL share, that don't break GPO

Now when I install FSRM and passive screen my C: drive which has SYSVOL, it breaks GPO Managment. You cannot edit a GPO or create a new GPO.
Please improve server 2019 by not making this a feature of installing FSRM.
Make it work like it did for server 2016 and below.

  17. Fix Offline WSUS Export Process

We need a better method for offline usage of WSUS. Today we need a two server WSUS installation to manage WSUS updates in an isolated offline environment. One server needs to be Internet facing, and the other ingests the exported updates after a long painful copy process is used. This entire process is error prone, and if a user accidently clicks SYNC, it destroys your existing offline WSUS install.

Currently no GPO's exist to prevent if from occurring and finding good process documentation is painfully difficult to find. Maintaining an offline WSUS server is an archaic process prone to numerous…

  18. Pagefile encryption

Pagefile can potentially hold sensitive data. There is an option to wipe pagefile on shutdown, which takes long and probably does not work with SSD disks. And there is an option to encrypt the pagefile.
However according to this source: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/fe44476d-a0f0-4e20-a6c5-c790c177a021/ntfs-pagefile-encryption?forum=w7itprosecurity the encryption key is always the same.

So my suggestion is to have an option to generate a new encryption key for the pagefile on every boot which makes previous versions of the pagefile inaccessible and there would be no need to wipe the pagefile on shutdown anymore.

  19. In Active Directory have an option to enable an account on a specified date.

In Active Directory there is an option to disable an account a date. Yet there is no option to enable an account on a particular date. This would be helpful for provisioning new hire accounts without having the manually go in and remember to enable accounts created in advance.

  20. SDN Hyper-V Network Virtualization with manually assign IP

SDN in Window Server 2016 onward is a very great solution. Managing VM networking from the Network Controller and enable isolation of VM Network.

One feature that i find missing with this is a ability to assign static IP manually to the VM in an isolated VM Network managed by Network Controller. This would enable Domain Controller to be setup in this Isolated VM Network. Also VM what are not Windows base like Linux or specific distribution that serve as networking work (SSL Web Reverse Proxy).
