General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. 1. Mirocosoft Security & Compliance Toolkit - Common approach to apply GPOs

Currently the GPOs provided by MS SCT (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/security-compliance-toolkit-10) have differents approaches how to install them.
    e.g.
    Windows 10 Version 1507 Security Baseline\LocalScript\10ClientInstall.cmd
Windows 10 Version 1809 and Windows Server 2019 Security Baseline\Local
    Script\BaselineLocalInstall.ps1
    Windows 10 Version 1909 and Windows Server Version 1909 Security Baseline\Scripts{Baseline-LocalInstall.ps1, Baseline-ADImport.ps1, Remove-EPBaselineSettings.ps1}

It would be nice to have common/generic approach how those GPOs can be applied. For example one powershell script that can be used to install any GPO regardless of the Windows patch level or AD status (joind to AD or standalone/local GPO) and specify the details with parameters. Otherwise…

  3. Make ISO hashes / checksums publicly accessible

Currently volume licensing and most other MS portals don't provide (SHA, MD5 or any) filehashes.
I learned that later this year MS is planning to update the VLSC portal to support this. That's good news.

It would be a bonus to see the hashes on a true public part of the portals or otherwise on www.microsoft.com without any form of subscription.
Reason is that only a limited number of persons have an account that can actually download ISO’s from VLSC. On the other hand, a lot of IT admins cannot download themselves but use these ISO’s and have to rely…

  4. Add support for multiple monitors in Windows Remote Desktop

With the old Remote Desktop Connection app, there was a display setting to "Use all my monitors for the remote session." This still works in that app, but I have been unable to find such a setting in this Windows Remote Desktop. I prefer to use this app because there are multiple machines I need to remote into and it's nice to be able to logically group them and whatnot, but there are times when I want to remote in and have that be my whole computer screen, and for that I have to use the older app, which sometimes…

  5. mstsc

We have been hitting issues lately with the process in which out engineers RDP to remote servers.

We're doing away with embedding RDP windows within legacy winforms apps and instead are just connection to the session via ps.

The only downside of doing so is losing the ability to set a "Friendly Name" title to the session window.

This is an issue as some engineers may be working with 10+ sessions at once

I would like for the ability to set this using a "/title" parameter.

  6. Prevent NTFS Change Permissions from being applied when Creator Owner is removed

When Creator Owner is removed from NTFS permissions, change permissions is still given when a person with Modify rights creates a new folder/file. If the Modify permission is the only permission granted, a person who creates a new folder/file should not be granted the Change Permissions when Creator Owner has been removed from the NTFS permissions.

  7. Bring back the bare metal install to Nano Server

    Hi Microsoft Team,

How are you? I hope everything going well.

Long time ago the microsoft decide to stop to Support/Deploy nano server on Bare metal.
However, this position can be very usefully to work with Container, instead to create a physical cluster with Windows Server Core(Swarm of Kubernetes), we can create a cluster to run container and with it, save space, less update, less security issue e with more performance . This is not a simple solution I Know that. But it can be a game change.

  8. extend-a-basic-volume does not work and after trying, lots of programs and icons on desktop have now a red x in lower left corner

  9. Remote Desktop web client and desktop certificate

In the web client we get the following message:

Oops, we couldn't connect to "Workstation"

Your session ended because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote PC. Ask your admin or tech support for help.

If we use the standard remote desktop application, we can choose to accept that the certificate may not be correct and connect anyway. It would be good if we had the same choice through the web client.

  11. UserVoice Microsoft Windows Server has a Copyright 2015 (and it feels like it)

This website from UserVoice shows a copyright of 2015 with a blurry low resolution Microsoft logo and it certaainly feels like 2015. This site and the Remote Desktop Services ( https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises ) feel as if Microsoft has left Windows Server as forgotten product line.

I know Microsoft has been forced to change gears to reconnect with the standard consumer, but what about the Windows Server specialist. Is this how we are going to improve Windows Server deployments?

  12. The AD FS upgrade scenario from 2012 R2 to 2016 with a SQL database is missing 2019 info

The following link contains the steps to upgrade an AD FS farm from 2012 R2 to 2016 when a SQL server is involved. It does not mention 2019.
Is it possible to add it? The process is similar the only difference is the FBL.
The link to the article: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/deployment/upgrading-to-ad-fs-in-windows-server-sql

  13. Begin by properly documenting the basic keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-X. This also applies to WaaS. Then hire writers.

Microsoft lawyers claim that Microsoft comes with "help" also known as "documentation." When one examines the claimed documentation one finds the usual finely crafted, artistic web pages that contain minimal information for the technical, non-employees who want a deep dive into how to operate Windows (various attempted releases). It is clear why Microsoft keeps this sort of thing close to the vest. Were it to become clear that there really isn't any documentation and no operating instructions then sales would stay exactly where they are. Nobody cares. Especially among the don't care group are top executives at Microsoft. And the…

  14. We need to possibility to decline updates for spesific computer groups just as well as approving updates for groups

If you have several types of clients updated by a wsus server, the software vendor for some of the clints might have found some updates to cause problems for their software so that the specific updates should be possible to decline for specific computer groups while still being available for other groups. I really do not understand why there is no such possibility in wsus.. As it is now, "not approved updates" could mean two things. Either you specifically do not want to install the update or you have just not decided over the update yet, it really should be…

  15. Reduced Storage performance when running a new install of server 2016

I read on materials that storport performnace is reduced on server 2016.
And I want to know if this issue resolved by updating system driver with the latest storport.sys.version : 10.0.14393.3053

    I attached related URL below

    https://docs.microsoft.com/ko-kr/windows-server/get-started/windows-server-2016-ga-release-notes#storport-performance

If it is fixed, can you edit the contents on above URL?

  18. Enable ACL tracking for resource access

When accessing resources the user Token is presented and granted or denied access based on SIDs presented (Not taking DACL in to account). Tracking stale groups and ACLs is difficult in an environment, especially if there are multiple granting ACLs to a resource.

It would be good if there could be an event or log that would show an audit of not just a principal getting access, but how they got access. E.g. SID of the user is present on the Resource and gained access by proxy of direct permissions... or by proxy of a SID of a group in…

  19. Allow for easy creation of base64 certificates with separate cert and key files

I would like to use and continue to use the investment into AD CS. Currently using AD CS for non windows devices is painful due to the nature of requesting certs and getting them in formats useful for non windows devices. Maybe a modernized AD CS web enrollment site would help achieve this.

  20. restore old posts from blogs.technet.com

blogs.technet.com had several valuable articles (ie. VMQ deep-dive,etc,etc) that were covering the lack of documentation in the official Product portal (docs.Microsoft.com / technet.microsoft.com) . since hte move to https://techcommunity.microsoft.com several of those articles are lost.

Please restore them or transfer the contents to docs.microsoft.com
