Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

        • Ensure that NTFS rights function identically whether using UNC path or mapped drive to same location

I have been redirected here by recommendation of MSFT CSG in response to post on the Windows Server forum here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4d27b27b-5354-413f-8eeb-48ae9fb1e795/ntfs-rights-unc-vs-mapped-explorer-vs-command-prompt?forum=winserverfiles. Apparently, my question has exceeded the limits of "how do I do this?" and entered the realm of "why does Windows behave inconsistently?", which I call a bug.

          Scope
The behavior below is the same for at least Server 2008 R2 & 2012 R2, both with Windows 7 workstation. I have not tested elsewhere.

          Scenario
User has only traverse & permissions NTFS rights at root of share but full share-level permissions. User has full access to a subfolder…

            • Add option to re-check for updates before installing

When going to apply updates, there should at least be an option to check for updates if updates are already found. This was previously an option through Server 2012 R2 and is no longer possible. Because of this, changes to available updates may not be received by the client computer until after the update list is applied and the server is rebooted. Given how locked down the update interface is now, even having that option automatically happen in the background would be great.

In my environment, I use WSUS to patch all of my servers. This month, KB4041691 was installed…

                  • Cortana becomes an alarm system listening, like Ring or Nest, records suspicious sounds, calls cellphone

Cortana voice command to alarm mode, listens while you're gone, calls when it hears suspicious sounds, plays recording of sound etc. Like Nest or Ring. MS could own this biz.

                    • Remove all in-box dependancies on WOW64 (e.g. - misexec.exe)

I've been experimenting with removing WOW64 support from servers. There have been several instances where I've had to reinstall it for operations that have very little to do with the actual server function. The most common scenario is installing MSIs like System Center agents. After the installation is complete I can remove WOW64 and the server operates perfectly. Why can't we just have a native x64 Windows Installer?

                      • fix a bug in windows shell link to cmd script with run as administrator enabled

When I create a link to a cmd-script and enable the Option run as Administrator mostly it works fine.
But when the cmd-script is in a Folder with () in the Name the script didn't run after UAC Dialog.
                        Please fix this

I am reading about the Policy Analyzer. https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/secguide/2016/10/22/policy-analyzer-v3-1-pre-release

Microsoft has been moving more projects open source into Git. Has there been any discussions about making this tool open? I imagine the community might be able to make some meaningful contributions. Based on the comments in this post there is lots of interest on this topic!

                            • Allow tasks to be run at shutdown from the task scheduler

Currently there's not an easy way to run commands at shutdown from the task scheduler, aside from an Event trigger. The issue is that the task needs to run extremely quickly or the error 2147943515 shows up. In my specific case, I like to run a quick REST call to my monitoring service to remove it from the monitoring system before the host shuts down.

                                    Here's an odd one.

Promote Windows Server 2016 to a domain controller.

Using Group Policy Management, edit the Default Domain Controllers Policy as follows:

Computer Configuration - Policies - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - Security Options - Network security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos

                                    Choose
                                    AES128_HMAC_SHA1
                                    AES256_HMAC_SHA1
                                    Future encryption types

                                    Restart your domain controller.

Using Group Policy Management, edit the Default Domain Controllers Policy as follows:

Computer Configuration - Policies - Windows Settings - Security Settings

Notice that an IP Security Policy Management error appears.

A directory service error has occurred - (80072095)

                                    Also notice…

                                    • Console interface

This belongs to Win10 Home and Pro but i cant find the link to it.

It would be great if theres an application for Win10 Home and Pro, which behaves and looks like an xbox one. I want to use my computer with my tv and wireless controller, just like a regular console.

                                      - starting and shutting down the computer and games and steam, uplay,...
                                      - no mouse and keyboard needed
                                      - controlling absolutely everything with the controller
                                      - one-click-switch to change between computer- and console-mode

                                      That would be great

                                      • Excel sheet notification to person that occupies my sheets

Is it possible to ensure a way of communicating with the person who is using my excel sheet? I was just about to open the file I created and one of my colleques seems to use it already. Unfurtunately it is urgend and the excel notification that states that I can open a copied version until my excel sheet is available again leaves me only with the option to get myself notified when the sheet is available again. It would be amazing to allow to send a message to that person using my file, unfortunately the person who is using…

                                        • Support full in-place upgrade

I believe it would help a lot of organizations if in-place upgrade of Windows Server to newer builds was fully supported. With the change of release schedule it would make it easier for smaller organizations and one-box setups to stay up to date.
