General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

RS5's strange update behavior of .NET Framework Preview CU

Today (1/22 PST), Microsoft released two preview udpates for RS5 - KB4476976 and KB4481031. Thease updates are D release. But Preview of Cumulative Update for .NET Framework (KB4481031) was automatically installed to some Windows 10 ver 1809 and Windows Server 2019. This behavior is not assumed. I did not click "Check for updates". KB4481031 says

      "Install this update

Add support to multi language server core 2019 when running on containers

Default servercore:1809 image came with en-US.

        - At this moment, for Server Core 2019, you have to install language pack by yourself: https://docs.microsoft.com/pt-br/windows-server/get-started-19/rel-notes-19.
        - The way to do it, is using lpksetup: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4466511/cannot-configure-language-pack-for-windows-server-2019
        - But lpksetup.exe crashes when running on container

I've described step by step how to reproduce lpksetup.exe error on container, **producing crash report logs** that I've extracted from container.
        All here: https://github.com/sanguedemonstro/docker-playground/issues/1#issuecomment-453078549

        With extra details here: https://github.com/sanguedemonstro/docker-playground/blob/master/langpack-on-servercore2019.md#why-am-i-playing-around-this-subject

But I'm not able to understand logs or fix windows base image. And I can't open support ticket once I'm not MS partner.

So if anyone could help I'm…

          Hyper-v Replication stops working

Server 2016 replication worked to secondary server. Now, both machines are upgraded to 2019. Replication works for hours and then fails. Requires restart of machine (and killing VM tasks as they won't shutdown gracefully) to get replication working again only to have it fail again.

            Hyper-V management service stops listening

Under 2019, the Hyper-V management service stops listening (Server was upgraded from 2016). Shutting down the service hangs.

            Hyper-V was stable under 2016.

              Restore RDP Connection Stability

RDP Connections to Server 2019 are not stable - connection drops within seconds.

1 Dell R730 and 1 Dell R710 upgraded from Server 2016 to Server 2019. RDP worked perfectly under 2016. 2019 cannot maintain a stable connection. Performed Clean install on R710 but problem persists.

This must be a new bug in 2019 as the same hardware and NIC configuration worked under 2016.

Server 2012 R2 VM Live Migration to Server 2019, VM won't boot after shutting down

If you use Hyper V Live Migration from Server 2012 R2 (not sure if any other OS) to migrate to Server 2019. The migration works but as soon as you shut down the VM and try to start it again, will no longer boot. It turns on/off 3 times and remains off.

I also did cluster to cluster migration in VMM and this is the same behaviour.

It looks like it is due the migrated MAC address, if I set the VM to get a new dynamic mac address it seems to work. If I set it to it's original…

Fix Windows Server 2019 Active Directory Domain Controller and Environment Bugs

It would appears I'm not the only one experiencing the issue, I did a fresh install promote it to a Windows Server 2016 Forest and Domain AD. After the reboot I realize the Start Menu settings cannot be changed, next I found that whole load of permission error whenever I try to launch anything that requires Administrator privilege including Server Manager, Settings and Control Panel. After that I went to check the permission settings of the C drive and Windows folder as compared to previous version of Windows Server, "Authenticated Users" is no longer part of the default permissions. This…

SCVMM (VMM) & S2D should support cross-cluster migration of highly available VMs

Migrations of highly-available VMs from one cluster to another while using S2D and SOFS as a storage solution (NOT hyper-converged) should be supported by VMM.

VMM has built-in functionality to allow migration of a VM from one cluster to another.

This does NOT work with HA VMs when your storage solution is SOFS on S2D. The VM will be placed in pause-critical, effectively a failed migration.

I believe this is a shortcoming on the part of Failover Clustering not properly handling storage communication, but not sure as this action isn't able to be automated outside VMM.

Resolve the Windows Server 2019 bug stopping it from booting on certain servers with UEFI enabled when the Hyper-V Role is installed.

There's a pretty big problem on some servers (at least two Dell PET Servers I've tried so far) that stops Server 2019 from booting/goes into a boot loop once the Hyper-V role is installed.

Windows Server 2019 Search function doesn't work without Internet connection

Search function is not working when Server 2019 is not connected to internet. I'm not getting any search results when I search after installed programs from start menu. When I connect the server to Internet everything is fine. Sometimes it works when i go back to offline mode until I reboot server again. We have lots of offline servers so I hope you can fix this problem before we start to migrate to Sever 2019.

Issue on Windows10 Pro as RDP listener - internal error occurred

                                    Hello,

I want to report one issue that is easy to reproduce, it occurs with any rdp client that connects to Windows10 Pro with enabled RDP connections, actually used mstsc.exe to connect from one Windows10 pro machine to another Windows10 pro machine with enabled RDP.

After ~100 tries to restore interrupted connection the server refuses future rdp connection tries with internal error occurred message reported by mstsc.exe.

It doesn't matter if you have logged off the session during running, as example did 20 connection restorings then logged off, logged in and did next 80 connection restorings, that was only example,…

MSTSC Should Be More Forthcoming With Diagnostics; Beyond "An Internal Error Occurred"

I manage a PC that runs Broadcast Software International's Simian application in production 24/7 for a radio station. It is royally impossible to manage the PC via mstsc which reports "An Internal Error Occurred." There is a VPN involved provided by WatchGuard's appliance. The VPN is NOT the problem. Remote Desktop works for the brother PC that also runs Windows 7 with University of Kansas's Telephone Reader application in production 24/7. My hypothesis is that the broadcast-quality sound card is being accessed, with catastrophic results, by the server part of RDP in Windows 7 even in the case where I…

Task Manager and Admin Centre cannot see CPU usage

I have HPE Proliant MicroServer Gen8 and installed Windows Server 2019. After I set non-unicode language to Chinese(Simp), I cannot see CPU usage anymore in task manager, resource monitor, and Admin Centre. Even I revert it back to English(US), it still would not help.

Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 does not seem to be compatible with Apple OS split view like version 8 was

Can you fix the fact that Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 no longer supports Apple OS Split View
