General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. ReFs RAW and metadata inconsistency issues

We have a storage spaces two way mirror two column setup with ReFs.

Each time the DataIntegrityScan runs we get a warning.
Volume metadata inconsistency was detected and was repaired successfully.
    Volume name: D:
    Metadata reference: 0x204
    Range offset: 0x0
    Range length (in bytes): 0x0
    Bytes repaired: 0x3000
    Status: STATUS_SUCCESS

And each time Windows update requires a reboot the volume is detected as RAW!

If we reboot the server again it is detected as ReFs.

    Running Windows Server 2016 Standard.

  2. pagefile

    Following this discussion:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/c5f2786c-ffac-4f14-b7a9-00612cdf784e/server-2016-vm-hangs-shutting-downrestarting-when-the-pagefile-is-on-a-different-vhdx?forum=winserverhyperv

The core problem is the following, for example (simple config), for Exchange or SQL servers in a HYPER-V VM under Windows 2016:

systemdrive for windows system (and sql, exchange core),
datadrive for mbx data or sql-databases
    datadrive for log file
    drive for pagefile

We create for all this drive a separat VHDX file and add this to the VM as SCSI drive.

The drive for pagefile (fast SSD, NVMe or other) is exclusiv for the pagefile reserved. No other data on it. The drive for pagefile is the only drive with a pagefile for this vm.…

  4. Support for Network Policy Server (NPS) Role on Server Core

Network Policy Server is an infrastructure services role much like ADDS, ADCS, DNS, and DHCP.

We need to have support for this role added to Server Core. Requiring a GUI for this role means more patches, wasted CPU cycles and wasted memory.

  5. Working automatic Removal of Entries in all Eventlogs after x days configured by GPOs

We need a working solution to automatically remove all entries in all eventlogs, not only for system, app, security, after several days, regardless how big the eventlog is. The limit should be configured with GPOs for Win 10 and Server 2016. At the moment all solutions in the Internet are not really working or are very painful. It will became important with the data privacy laws to have an easy reliable way to configure this.

  6. smtp in 1709

With Office 365, the need for a on-premise SMTP Server for relaying from on-premise devices that send email is pretty high. Having SMTP Server in the lightweight Windows Server 1709 would seem to be a desireable feature

  8. About Windows Update in Project Honolulu Build 05002

In Project Honolulu Build 05002, I found many available updates in Windows Update page. They are about server hardware drivers and software. But in server GUI console, there is no any new update. Please check the issue.

  9. 1709 WSUS client scan takes a long time and tries to connect to SLS.Update.Microsoft.com

Unlike the 1607 full GUI client that scan in a few seconds, all 1709 servers take extremely long time to scan against WSUS (which is running 1709 btw) and the logs show that they are trying to connect to SLS.update.microsoft.com which fails due to lack of internet connectivity.

  10. Windows Defender suffers from Decompression Bomb attack

Windows Defender suffers from a "Decompression Bomb" attack.

    Steps to reproduce:
    * In Windows 10, enable Windows Defender scanning of an archive via PowerShell:
    set-mppreference -disablearchivescanning $true

    • Create a file larger than the free space on %SystemDrive%, place the file in an archive (e.g. image.gz), place archive file on a USB drive, and plug drive in mounted to E:.

    • Using either the Windows Defender GUI, command prompt, or PowerShell, scan the image.gz file. For example, with command prompt:
      "%programfiles%\Windows Defender\mpcmdrun" -scan -scantype 3 -file E:\image.gz

What will happen next is after a few minutes, Windows Defender will create a temporary…

  12. Schedule what days full backups occur and what days incremental backups occur

It should be simple to schedule in the GUI what days FULL backups occur - e.g. Sunday and what days incremental backups occur - e.g. Monday -Saturday. Again this should be in the GUI - no scripts, no powershell.

  13. Update the integrated windows server backup. It works well but not if you want to backup specific guest VMs at particular times.

Windows Server backup works well - HOWEVER it doesn't let you easily schedule specific guest VMs for backups at different times through the GUI. Please no powershell - just simple GUI. It should also make it easy to schedule other items to stop or start at the beginning and end of a backup job.

  14. Don't delete deactivated Inboxrules in Outlook

If you have deactivated Inboxrules in Outlook your administrator cannot see the them. Also, if he changes one activated rule or create a new one, all the deactivated rules will be deleted.

  15. On Hyper-V hosts, warn before running destructive actions on host

When a Windows Server 2016 machine is a Hyper-V host, attempting to run system-wide destructive actions, such as sysprep, should be warned against more vocally than typical actions, such as shutdown. Such actions have far greater ramifications than mundane actions such as restart or shutdown. This will provide visual queues to administrators who are working directly on Hyper-V hosts and using the "Connect..." feature of Hyper-V Manager to open consoles to VMs on the host. Such destructive actions are frequently needed when building new VMs, but are very rarely needed on host machines.

  16. Improve/Automate database cleaning on WSUS / SCCM

Had a Microsoft Premier case to clean WSUS Database as was having synchronization problems. Microsoft gave manual scripts to run against the database to clean. They said the feature to optimize the database is not built in. I request it be added.
    Applies to Windows 2008R2, 2012,2012R@

  17. Give option to uncheck "Automatically upgrade any superseded version of this application" for Available deployments to Device Collections

Give SCCM administrators the option to uncheck "Automatically upgrade any superseded version of this application" for Available deployments to Device Collections. This option is available for user collection deployments, which makes no sense on why you would not give the same option on Available deployments to Device Collections. The option is grayed out and there is no way to uncheck it.

  20. IP locks after x invalid login attempts

An attacker's IP should be blocked for the Remote Desktop Access after X invalid logins.
Best for a certain period of time.
(A user can also be deactivated for x minutes after X invalid login attempts)

We are seeing more and more server intrusion attempts with invalid usernames.
