All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. 3. Generating clean energy

    Hi there,

I have selected a wrong topic as there was no other option.

Topic here is an idea that has a very good potential of generating clean electricity.

I am trying to find a place where I can pitch an idea to microsoft. I know this is not the right medium, but I have a solid idea which can change the world the way it generates electricity. I have drafted patented document with all details. Can someone help me to reach this to your team?

  5. hyper-V Manager

In Virtual Machines list a column to show whether the VM is the primary replicating out, or a dormant replica.

I had a panicked user start the replica because he thought the VM was turned off.

That said, can I rename the VM on the replica side only (by adding the word REPLICA for example)?

  6. Uninstall button greyed out in Software Center for applications that are pushed via a "required" collection

When deploying an application through a collection in "required" state, uninstall button is greyed out. This doesn't happen if the application is installed through a collection in "available" state. We would like to have the uninstall button always accessible, no matter if the application was pushed in a required state or not. Corruption happens all the time and technicians need to be able to uninstall/reinstall all the time. Because uninstall is greyed out, they have to use the control panel instead, which defeats the purpose of using Software Center.

  7. Lower the priority of "automatic maintenance" (tiworker.exe)

Every now and then after a server restart, tiworker.exe jumps to 100% CPU usage for a long time, effectively DOS-ing single-processor servers.

Google (or bing) for "automatic maintenance" tiworker.exe for lots of reports on this issue, including blog posts of people recommending to disable this task.

My suggestion would be to lower that task's priority by default ("below normal" works well based on my tests): 30 minutes of background maintenance and a responsive server is much better than 15 minutes of background maintenance and a server which is practically unusable during that time.

  9. Support Azure AD domain join for Windows Server 2016

Microsoft should strongly consider implementing support for Azure AD join in future builds of Windows Server 2016. I how a couple of customers that have nearly finished the transition to all cloud and is left with a couple of servers due to legacy software. They are currently left with the option to deploy Azure AD Domain Services for supporting a couple (2-5) servers.

  10. ReFs RAW and metadata inconsistency issues

We have a storage spaces two way mirror two column setup with ReFs.

Each time the DataIntegrityScan runs we get a warning.
Volume metadata inconsistency was detected and was repaired successfully.
    Volume name: D:
    Metadata reference: 0x204
    Range offset: 0x0
    Range length (in bytes): 0x0
    Bytes repaired: 0x3000
    Status: STATUS_SUCCESS

And each time Windows update requires a reboot the volume is detected as RAW!

If we reboot the server again it is detected as ReFs.

    Running Windows Server 2016 Standard.

  11. pagefile

    Following this discussion:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/c5f2786c-ffac-4f14-b7a9-00612cdf784e/server-2016-vm-hangs-shutting-downrestarting-when-the-pagefile-is-on-a-different-vhdx?forum=winserverhyperv

The core problem is the following, for example (simple config), for Exchange or SQL servers in a HYPER-V VM under Windows 2016:

systemdrive for windows system (and sql, exchange core),
datadrive for mbx data or sql-databases
    datadrive for log file
    drive for pagefile

We create for all this drive a separat VHDX file and add this to the VM as SCSI drive.

The drive for pagefile (fast SSD, NVMe or other) is exclusiv for the pagefile reserved. No other data on it. The drive for pagefile is the only drive with a pagefile for this vm.…

  13. Support for Network Policy Server (NPS) Role on Server Core

Network Policy Server is an infrastructure services role much like ADDS, ADCS, DNS, and DHCP.

We need to have support for this role added to Server Core. Requiring a GUI for this role means more patches, wasted CPU cycles and wasted memory.

  14. Working automatic Removal of Entries in all Eventlogs after x days configured by GPOs

We need a working solution to automatically remove all entries in all eventlogs, not only for system, app, security, after several days, regardless how big the eventlog is. The limit should be configured with GPOs for Win 10 and Server 2016. At the moment all solutions in the Internet are not really working or are very painful. It will became important with the data privacy laws to have an easy reliable way to configure this.

  15. smtp in 1709

With Office 365, the need for a on-premise SMTP Server for relaying from on-premise devices that send email is pretty high. Having SMTP Server in the lightweight Windows Server 1709 would seem to be a desireable feature

  17. About Windows Update in Project Honolulu Build 05002

In Project Honolulu Build 05002, I found many available updates in Windows Update page. They are about server hardware drivers and software. But in server GUI console, there is no any new update. Please check the issue.

  18. 1709 WSUS client scan takes a long time and tries to connect to SLS.Update.Microsoft.com

Unlike the 1607 full GUI client that scan in a few seconds, all 1709 servers take extremely long time to scan against WSUS (which is running 1709 btw) and the logs show that they are trying to connect to SLS.update.microsoft.com which fails due to lack of internet connectivity.

  19. Windows Defender suffers from Decompression Bomb attack

Windows Defender suffers from a "Decompression Bomb" attack.

    Steps to reproduce:
    * In Windows 10, enable Windows Defender scanning of an archive via PowerShell:
    set-mppreference -disablearchivescanning $true

    • Create a file larger than the free space on %SystemDrive%, place the file in an archive (e.g. image.gz), place archive file on a USB drive, and plug drive in mounted to E:.

    • Using either the Windows Defender GUI, command prompt, or PowerShell, scan the image.gz file. For example, with command prompt:
      "%programfiles%\Windows Defender\mpcmdrun" -scan -scantype 3 -file E:\image.gz

What will happen next is after a few minutes, Windows Defender will create a temporary…
