General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. 1. Add locales that use UTF8 (Code Page 65001) by default

Most modern Unix-based OSes make UTF-8 the default character encoding.
Considering OpenSSH ( http://blogs.msdn.com/b/powershell/archive/2015/10/19/openssh-for-windows-update.aspx ), Now is the time for Windows to support UTF8-native locales. we need system-wide and reboot-trelant way.

  4. Update ADMT to officially support Windows Server 2016 & Recent SQL version

Hi! There is currently no official support for Windows Server 2016 to run ADMT. It remains an important tool and I'm sure many will appreciate not needing to install older versions of Windows to migrate between AD's.

  5. Add cross-server service dependencies

If I have an application that needs SQL to be running on another server, it would be great to be able to add a dependency in my services control panel that would prevent that service from being started until it saw SQL running on another server, with an optional startup delay afterward.

In addition to this, in general, a "startup delay" you can specify in seconds for services would be beneficial. We've had some race conditions in our environment which have meant some services have failed to start due to network adapter/netlogon availabilty, and the options to correct this are…

  6. Windows Server 2016 Essentials Connector broken on Windows 10 1803

After upgrading a machine to Windows 10 1803 (build 17115) the Essentials Connector no longer connects to the server, does not run any of the apps and deinstallation/reinstallation including fresh install clearing down registry and ProgramData does not fix it. This will block upgrading my estate to Windows 10 1803 if not fixed urgently. Have also reported back through Feedback App on Windows 10.

  7. notepad should support files without carriage returns

It would be very useful and helpful to have better line ending support in Notepad.
Third party software often comes with config files that's origin is from a Linux world and only having LF inside.
Notepad just shows one big line and editing such files is almost impossible.
As WordPad supports LF since years it would be that feature to have notepad.exe be aware of CRLF and LF files.

  8. Make Server Essentials 2016 Connector More Robust to Windows Upgrades

The Server Essentials Connector client often loses its connection to the server following a Windows Update. This is both frustrating if seen, or an issue if missed (if the icon is not always shown) as it can lead to backups not happening for a number of days. Normally it is then just a case of running the ClientDeploy app, but you have to know where to find this (it is not added to the all programs list).

Ideally the connector should be much more robust to Windows Updates and should simply "just work" but, if it does not connect it…

  10. Windows Server 2016 Essentials (or "edition" + Essentials) needs to support Windows 10 1709

After upgrading my Windows 10 Pro 1703 to 1709, the Essentials connector was de-installed and I'm no longer able to run the installer.

Please update Windows Server 2016 Essentials to support Windows 10 1709.

  11. Problems with March 2017 Security Rollup

The moderator from the server forum suggested I post here (please see https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a894761b-963e-4e4a-a309-d28999209448/march-2017-security-updates-breaks-ntlm-authentication-of-samba-shares-over-netbios?forum=winserversecurity).

We had a production down weekend after installing Microsoft's security March 2017 rollup. This question is to help us understand what was included in the March rollup that broke production in order that we can properly document the workaround.

    Scenario:

    1. Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers.

    2. March 2017 security rollup applied.

    3. SAMBA shares hosted on AIX using NTLM authentication stopped working, giving access denied (client message)
Error on AIX host is: "FAILED with error NTSTATUSNOLOGONSERVERS"
Error on AIX host is: "SPNEGO login failed:…

  12. Enable the selection of the issuer claim per OpenID relying party

AD FS publishes two different issuer values in the public https://<domain>/adfs/.well-known/openid-configuration : One is called 'issuer' the other is 'accesstokenissuer' - the accesstokenissuer is optional in the standard. The value that is issued in the access token iss claim is always the 'accesstokenissuer' some clients (.Net ones) validate the access token against the 'accesstokenissuer' others (using open source libraries) will only validate against the 'issuer'
It would be great if I could select per relying party which value is returned in the access token iss claim.

  13. Make hyper-v integration services update work for none internet connected servers and VM's. Publish the IS KB's for download

Hyper-V Servers or VM's that are not able to get to the internet Microsoft Windows Update Server are not able to get the Integration Services updates. We need a PowerShell way to be able to check to see what Integration Services version is installed like we had (Get-vm -ComputerName $Env:computername | ft ComputerName,Name,State,IntegrationServicesVersion,IntegrationServicesState

) and a way to update them with a KB update.

  15. RSAT tools to support below the typical N-1 level

Often many of us work in an environment that is evolving to the latest OS, but perhaps technology or development of internal applications have held or slowed us from updating these to current standards. We are encouraged to use RSAT tools to manage these hosts and services, but these tools are only backwards compatible by N-1.

This means that with a Windows 10 (current build) laptop, which will use RSAT for 2016, I cannot manage my older Windows 2012 or even 2008r2 hosts. I then have to either use a VM which is running Win7 or 8.1 with RSAT to…

  16. Windows Server 2016 Essentials Connector not working after Windows 1903 update

After upgrading my Windows 10 Pro 1809 to 1903, the Essentials connector was not working anymore as in the login process did not work. I always got the error message "Server is not online. Do you want to log into the offline mode?" on my Windows PC. Several reinstallations later it still does not work and therefore the backup of my PC not either.
Please provide a solution to this problem or solve it with a cumulative windows update.

  18. Support DirectAccess in Azure

As more companies look at the cloud for their disaster recovery (or primary site) it would be nice to be able to deploy DirectAccess in Azure. I currently have a scenario where DirectAccess in Azure would win over a cloud solution today.

  19. support nvidia vgpu

Please add vGPU support for modern Tesla GPU virtualization. RemoteFX doesn't quite cut it, and we shouldn't have to add even more third party apps ( Citrix / VMware) just to fully utilize our hardware.

  20. Repair Task Scheduler on Server 2019

I have been fighting task scheduler for a while and have determined that there is most definitely an issue with task scheduler

we have a batch file that calls an executable.
We can run that batch file from the file explorer and we can watch with a ui and see all the different actions being taken, typically about 120 lines of actions. and this typically takes about a minute and a half to run.

When we put that same batch file in task scheduler and run it on maybe a reocurrance of every 10 minutes, task scheduler starts the task,…
