General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. Add WPF Support to WinPE

While never fully supported, the support WinPE had for WPF was enough to allow folks to build flexible, customized tools. Most of us who have done it are SCCM admins building custom front-ends for the OSD process.

The excellent community has found a workaround to keep WPF going, but it would be nice to have support officially back to at least the level it was.

    Thanks!

  2. Windows Server 2016 allows a maximum of 12 active hours. This needs to be increased.

active hours on the update screen can be a maximum of 12 hours. this needs to be extended to 23 hours. Many servers are actively used for more than 12 hours by users from multiple shifts and reboots should not take place while users are accessing files on the server.

  3. Significantly increase the number of Banned IPs that can be stored in ADFS.

ADFS 2019 allows for 300 IPs to be added to the "Banned IP list"

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/operations/configure-ad-fs-banned-ip#adding-banned-ips

As there are nearly four billion public IPs on the internet, 300 is woefully inadequate.

Small customers that are only trying to block a few users aren't likely using ADFS anyway. Large organizations that rely on ADFS will hit the 300 limit almost immediately.

I'd like to see this number raised to 65538 (/16) or something similar.

  4. [Bug] Windows Admin Center page keeps requesting credentials

The Windows Admin Center page keeps requesting credentials for the Windows Admin Center when adding computers or installing extensions, and it often does so twice in a row.

  5. Remove insecure protocols from IIS

Default IIS HTTPS settings should get a good grade on https://www.ssllabs.com/
If legacy operating system support is needed, that should have to be enabled on a per-site basis.

  6. Add basic image editing to snipping tool

Snipping tool would really benefit from basic image editing options like drawing straight lines squares or circles to highlight or emphasise parts of the captured screen section. Similar to MS Paint drawing capabilities.
Would be really great if that functionality would be added or at least a button to open the snip inside image editor like MS Paint.

  8. Allow Microsoft Edge Favorites to be easily managed like the Internet Explorer Favorites folder structure and support folder redirection

Allow Microsoft Edge Favorites to be easily managed like the Internet Explorer Favorites folder structure (end user-manageable) and support folder redirection (especially in the Enterprise edition of Windows 10). The IE Favorites folder can be redirected to a network location and available on any computer a user logs into, Edge Favorites are stuck on the local hard drive in a non-user manageable form (ESE database). The same goes for Sticky Notes, in Windows 7 they were stored in the Roaming AppData folder and followed a user across computers. Now they have been converted to a "modern UI app" which is…

  9. configure the winrm client without starting the winrm server

When trying to user psremoting you have to add a trusted host to your client's trusted hosts. This is fine and we normally default to '*' for developer machines that need to talk to prod and other infra. The problem is that this also requires the developer machine to start the winrm service which 'allows the computer to recieve Windows Powershell remote commands that are sent using the WS-Management technology'. I get pushback from devs who don't want to run this server service and see it as an unecessary security risk. We typically don't need CredSSP or have issues with…

  10. SMTP Virtual Server in Server 2016 Core and Nano

2016 Server Core and Nano don't have the ability to add-windowsfeature smtp-server. I feel the SMTP feature would lend itself well to the lightweight nature of Core and Nano.

  13. Super Fine application control

In Windows 2000 Advanced Server/Datacenter Server, User could set very fine controls for all applications running or applications that will launch at specific time/interval.
    User could set:
    Affinity
    Priority
    Memory Usage
    Other fine control settings

Newer Windows versions removed this feature called "Process Control app UI", I hope in Windows Server 2016 we can get this functionality back so user can set super fine control for each application / process / filter / directshow filter .. etc

  15. RDSH role breaks Windows Search

    Hello,

on a fresh installed and fully patched Windows Server 2019 Std if I enable RDSH role the Windows Search stops working.

Windows Search service looks good and eventlog shows no errors but Indexing Options shows no locations enabled for indexing and I am unable to add them

    Things I have already tried

1 - Windows Search service restart

    2 - Server restart

    3 - Rebuild Index

4 - Enable Windows Search feature

    5 - DISM ad SFC

6 - Windows Troubleshoot - shows incorrect permission on C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data folder but is unable to fix them. If I manually fix those…

  16. Windows 2016 - Scheduled Task Access for non-admin Domain users

In Windows server 2016 we are unable to provide access on scheduled tasks for non-admin domain users. This is doable in windows 2012 by adding the permissions to C:\Windows\System32\Tasks folder but it is not working in windows 2016.

    Is this a know issue/bug with windows 2016 ?

    Thank You In Advance

  20. Suggestion: Improve Windows Server update process and reduce down times

Make Windows Server to be able to check, download, install updates while the server is running.

    like Android project Mainline.

so at first there will be 2 OS drives instead of 1, they'll be clones of each other. when an updates pops up, the OS will download and install it on the other drive that is not used to run the OS. the updates can be installed and completely finished on that drive. the next time a system admin restarts the server, OS will boot up from the other updated drive without ANY downtime for installing or finishing updates. once…
