General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  3. add Remote Desktop client Universal Resource Identifier (URI) scheme support to Windows 10

    The page at...
Remote Desktop client Universal Resource Identifier (URI) scheme support
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/clients/remote-desktop-uri

...describes the feature, but it isn't supported on Windows. Now that we have the Remote Desktop modern app, Windows should handle the URI scheme by default too, perhaps when the Remote Desktop modern app is installed.

  4. notepad should support files without carriage returns

It would be very useful and helpful to have better line ending support in Notepad.
Third party software often comes with config files that's origin is from a Linux world and only having LF inside.
Notepad just shows one big line and editing such files is almost impossible.
As WordPad supports LF since years it would be that feature to have notepad.exe be aware of CRLF and LF files.

  5. Double click group in permissions to open AD group

When modifying file permissions on a server, it would be a HUGE time saver if you could simply double click the group name and have it open the AD properties of the selected group.

Implementing this saves the time of having to open ADUC, then typing in the group name in search, then make the required group changes.

  6. hyper-V Manager

In Virtual Machines list a column to show whether the VM is the primary replicating out, or a dormant replica.

I had a panicked user start the replica because he thought the VM was turned off.

That said, can I rename the VM on the replica side only (by adding the word REPLICA for example)?

  7. ReFs RAW and metadata inconsistency issues

We have a storage spaces two way mirror two column setup with ReFs.

Each time the DataIntegrityScan runs we get a warning.
Volume metadata inconsistency was detected and was repaired successfully.
    Volume name: D:
    Metadata reference: 0x204
    Range offset: 0x0
    Range length (in bytes): 0x0
    Bytes repaired: 0x3000
    Status: STATUS_SUCCESS

And each time Windows update requires a reboot the volume is detected as RAW!

If we reboot the server again it is detected as ReFs.

    Running Windows Server 2016 Standard.

  8. Print Spooler Isolation

Ever since Windows server 2012 we have had printer driver isolation, but there is a need for print spooler isolation. This would allow for an individual spooler for a printer to be stopped and the jobs deleted without affecting all other printers on the print server. This could be done in a method where the main print spooler service spawns child instances for each print and then through an api you would be able to stop and start these child instances.

  11. Please Stop Using Ugly Aero Lite Theme in Windows Server

The Aero Lite theme looks ugly and does not represent the client version (Windows 10) of the OS. Please just use regular Windows 10 theme. It is critical in RDS servers that the experience is the same with the client version of the OS. I understand that GUI on Server is very bad but the RDS role requires a GUI.

  12. Why a mobile user interface on Windows Server?

Why Microsoft develop a mobile user interface on a server operating system. Its unuseable, unpractical and without any comon sense.

  13. Access to Windows10 UAP APIs

The promise of the new Windows10 Universal Apps is that they will run anywhere. That should include the server and Azure. I'd like to write my core libraries so that the code can be used on phones, tablets, PCs, Consoles and in the cloud.

I especially want access to the MediaComposition and Win2D libraries for rendering my animations to video which I can then send to Azure Media Services for transcoding.

  16. "3D Object" folder missing from GPO ( Folder Redirection Mechanism )

In GPO Folder Redirection Mechanism ( User Configuration --> Policies --> Windows Settings --> Folder Redirection ), there is "3D Object" Folder. This "3D Object" folder appears to be new with Windows 10

  17. Mirocosoft Security & Compliance Toolkit - Common approach to apply GPOs

Currently the GPOs provided by MS SCT (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/threat-protection/security-compliance-toolkit-10) have differents approaches how to install them.
    e.g.
    Windows 10 Version 1507 Security Baseline\LocalScript\10ClientInstall.cmd
Windows 10 Version 1809 and Windows Server 2019 Security Baseline\Local
    Script\BaselineLocalInstall.ps1
    Windows 10 Version 1909 and Windows Server Version 1909 Security Baseline\Scripts{Baseline-LocalInstall.ps1, Baseline-ADImport.ps1, Remove-EPBaselineSettings.ps1}

It would be nice to have common/generic approach how those GPOs can be applied. For example one powershell script that can be used to install any GPO regardless of the Windows patch level or AD status (joind to AD or standalone/local GPO) and specify the details with parameters. Otherwise…

  18. Server 2019 - ALT-F4 - bring back the shutdown/logoff dialog box

Historically, ALT-F4 will close out your windows...and if you were at the desktop, it would nicely bring up a dialog box asking if you'd like to sign-out or shutdown/reboot, etc. That is gone it seems...except for the built-in administrator. This leads to accidental logouts and closing of sessions that may have been active, etc. From what I've seen, MS has stated this is "by design" and needs to go to the forum to restore sanity. Seems odd it exists for one type of account and not able to be enabled for others. Regardless....bring back the logoff/shutdown dialog box please, or…

  19. Remove insecure protocols from builtin VPN/Wifi

Default VPN/WiFi settings shouldn't allow insecure connections, nor allow users to override acceptable CAs for a connection without the user acknowledging that what they're doing is very risky.

  20. Keep Windows 2016 long term service channel.

No longer are Windows 8 and Windows 10 Professional suitable for my clients. Going to Windows 2016 Standard in LTSC has solved a lot of problems. The semi-annual channel is too disruptive (creates a number of problems) in the work that traders are doing.
