General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. 1. Windows server images should not install deskop services such as Maps, One sync

Windows server should have the option to NOT install desktop services which are very unlikely to be used in a corporate environment these include Maps, Onsync, and XBox. Not only do they appear to be unnecessary they cause false positives with system monitoring software.

  2. Issue on Windows10 Pro as RDP listener - internal error occurred

    Hello,

I want to report one issue that is easy to reproduce, it occurs with any rdp client that connects to Windows10 Pro with enabled RDP connections, actually used mstsc.exe to connect from one Windows10 pro machine to another Windows10 pro machine with enabled RDP.

After ~100 tries to restore interrupted connection the server refuses future rdp connection tries with internal error occurred message reported by mstsc.exe.

It doesn't matter if you have logged off the session during running, as example did 20 connection restorings then logged off, logged in and did next 80 connection restorings, that was only example,…

  3. CEP/CES installation requires Enterprise Admins membership

The scenario is installation of CEP/CES (both are part of Windows AD Certificate Services role) and the problem is that this installation requires membership in either Enterprise Admins or root Domain Admins groups.
Would like to suggest to remove this hard coded requirement and provide normal delegation options where we can exactly provide to the installation user account minimum rights for performing CEP/CES installation.

  4. Win10/Hyper-V: Don't enable auto checkpoint by default

This setting is useless and just causes performance issues. If people want to take a checkpoint they can already just click "Checkpoint". At the very least there should be an option to disable this by default. Its frustrating to have to do it on an individual VM basis.

  6. Keep Windows 2016 long term service channel.

No longer are Windows 8 and Windows 10 Professional suitable for my clients. Going to Windows 2016 Standard in LTSC has solved a lot of problems. The semi-annual channel is too disruptive (creates a number of problems) in the work that traders are doing.

  7. RD client missing the local resources option

In the normal RDP client there is an option to connect local resources to your RDP session. Unfortunately this is not available in de RD Client (available in the Windows Store). Please add this functionality also in this client.

  8. revert from.ESD to .WIM so DISM will work

Many of your Windows users depend upon DISM repair so I suggest you revert to .WIM. .ESD can convert to .WIM but the level required to do so is above the majority of your users.
    Please escalate.

  9. ReFs RAW and metadata inconsistency issues

We have a storage spaces two way mirror two column setup with ReFs.

Each time the DataIntegrityScan runs we get a warning.
Volume metadata inconsistency was detected and was repaired successfully.
    Volume name: D:
    Metadata reference: 0x204
    Range offset: 0x0
    Range length (in bytes): 0x0
    Bytes repaired: 0x3000
    Status: STATUS_SUCCESS

And each time Windows update requires a reboot the volume is detected as RAW!

If we reboot the server again it is detected as ReFs.

    Running Windows Server 2016 Standard.

  10. Windows Server 2016 Essentials (or "edition" + Essentials) needs to support Windows 10 1709

After upgrading my Windows 10 Pro 1703 to 1709, the Essentials connector was de-installed and I'm no longer able to run the installer.

Please update Windows Server 2016 Essentials to support Windows 10 1709.

  12. Support full in-place upgrade

I believe it would help a lot of organizations if in-place upgrade of Windows Server to newer builds was fully supported. With the change of release schedule it would make it easier for smaller organizations and one-box setups to stay up to date.

  14. Problems with March 2017 Security Rollup

The moderator from the server forum suggested I post here (please see https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a894761b-963e-4e4a-a309-d28999209448/march-2017-security-updates-breaks-ntlm-authentication-of-samba-shares-over-netbios?forum=winserversecurity).

We had a production down weekend after installing Microsoft's security March 2017 rollup. This question is to help us understand what was included in the March rollup that broke production in order that we can properly document the workaround.

    Scenario:

    1. Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers.

    2. March 2017 security rollup applied.

    3. SAMBA shares hosted on AIX using NTLM authentication stopped working, giving access denied (client message)
Error on AIX host is: "FAILED with error NTSTATUSNOLOGONSERVERS"
Error on AIX host is: "SPNEGO login failed:…

  15. 2016, WDS, Deduplication: Option to disable RES.WIM usage

A bit of history here. Windows Deployment Services has been around for quite a number of years, and it uses a file-based deduplication mechanism to conserve disk space.

When we capture an image with WDS, what it is actually doing is creating hashes for all files on the disk and then checking to see if those hashes are present in RES.WIM. Any hashed files not present in RES.WIM are copied up to the server, added to RES.WIM, and then the disk image itself is just a list of hashes to pull out of RES.WIM to reconstruct the image.

    Without deduplication,…

  18. Different colors in files

Different Colors for various files in a folder to have a better overview of your files and documents.
If you create a folder, in which you want to highlight several files, it would be an enormous help to be able to mark your files in various colors, so you can find them easier and have a better time organizing your documents

  19. Hybrid Search of File Server with Office 365.

I want to search files on on-pre file servers by Office 365 Search without SharePoint Server.

Office 365 Hybrid Search with SharePoint Server 2016 can search files in on-pre file servers.
I want Office 365 Hybrid Search with Windows Search.
