Update KB5001347 breaks Windows Server System State backup on Synology NAS
After installing KB5001347 Windows Server Backup fails backing up system state (Hyper-V host component and VMs are involved) at least if a Synology NAS device SMB Share is targeted.
The error message(s) in backup management console is/are:
- The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Please retry the operation.
- The operation ended before completion.
The following error(s) is/are logged in event viewer:
- 517, Backup: The backup operation that started at 'UTCTIMESTAMP' has failed with following error code '0x8078004F' (The mounted backup volume is inaccessible. Please retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
- 10170, HYPER-V-VMMS: Requester reported unsuccessful backup for the virtual machine 'MACHINENAME'. (Virtual machine ID GUID).
The error is reproducible among all Hyper-V-Server 2016 installations. After uninstalling KB5001347 backup starts working again. After re-installing KB5001347 backup starts failing again.
After contacting synology support they analyzed the problem and could reproduce it. This should be fixed in the next dsm release.
I have a similar problem on Windows Server 2016. It appears to be a permissions issue when accesing the volume on the VHDX drive. At the beginning I though it was a corrupted volume, but the volume is fine.
I tried creating a VHDX drive and it works OK, but formatting it is a different story. Mounting has no volume label and formatting fails with "insufficient permissions" even as Administrator. Uninstalling KB5001347 brings VHDX handling back to normal.
Have the same issue, but neither Update KB5001347 nor Update KB5001382 is installed on my servers. Any ideas?
Same issue here on Server 2012R2
Same problem with KB5001382 on server 2012R2 !
Exactly the same problem here as thread starters have.
Hope Microsoft comes up with solution.
Same problem here when setting up Windows Server Backup on formatting a Backup-VHDX residing on Synology NAS in Server 2019 (KB5001342) or running a backup on existing VHDX. Backup to VHDX on synology in Server 2012 is also broken by update KB5001382.
Event log shows "VSS" with ID 8193 "Error calling CreateFile on volume"
