General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

If you have technical questions or need help with Windows Server, please visit our “TechNet Forums” https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?category=windowsserver

  1. Make ISO hashes / checksums publicly accessible

Currently volume licensing and most other MS portals don't provide (SHA, MD5 or any) filehashes.
I learned that later this year MS is planning to update the VLSC portal to support this. That's good news.

It would be a bonus to see the hashes on a true public part of the portals or otherwise on www.microsoft.com without any form of subscription.
Reason is that only a limited number of persons have an account that can actually download ISO’s from VLSC. On the other hand, a lot of IT admins cannot download themselves but use these ISO’s and have to rely…

  2. Prevent NTFS Change Permissions from being applied when Creator Owner is removed

When Creator Owner is removed from NTFS permissions, change permissions is still given when a person with Modify rights creates a new folder/file. If the Modify permission is the only permission granted, a person who creates a new folder/file should not be granted the Change Permissions when Creator Owner has been removed from the NTFS permissions.

  3. Enable ACL tracking for resource access

When accessing resources the user Token is presented and granted or denied access based on SIDs presented (Not taking DACL in to account). Tracking stale groups and ACLs is difficult in an environment, especially if there are multiple granting ACLs to a resource.

It would be good if there could be an event or log that would show an audit of not just a principal getting access, but how they got access. E.g. SID of the user is present on the Resource and gained access by proxy of direct permissions... or by proxy of a SID of a group in…

  4. We need to possibility to decline updates for spesific computer groups just as well as approving updates for groups

If you have several types of clients updated by a wsus server, the software vendor for some of the clints might have found some updates to cause problems for their software so that the specific updates should be possible to decline for specific computer groups while still being available for other groups. I really do not understand why there is no such possibility in wsus.. As it is now, "not approved updates" could mean two things. Either you specifically do not want to install the update or you have just not decided over the update yet, it really should be…

  5. Allow for easy creation of base64 certificates with separate cert and key files

I would like to use and continue to use the investment into AD CS. Currently using AD CS for non windows devices is painful due to the nature of requesting certs and getting them in formats useful for non windows devices. Maybe a modernized AD CS web enrollment site would help achieve this.

  6. Provide vagrant boxes

Provide update-to-date vagrant boxes for all major hypervisiors. Optionally, make Windows vagrant boxes easier to create.

  7. Add (proper) kubernetes overlay networking CNIs which support networkpolicies

Windows really needs to have a proper CNI to participate in hybrid Kubernetes clusters. Flannel just doesn't cut it. Please put effort in making Calico and/or Weave available.

  10. netsh trace and/or NetEventPacketCapture needs better packet filtering.

"netsh trace" and/or NetEventPacketCapture lacks capable packet filtering. A lot of secure and change managed environments do not [easily] allow the installation of packet capture tools for collecting network data, like Wireshark (or the now defunct netmon and Message Analyzer).

The two built-in packet capture tools in Windows, "netsh trace" and NetEventPacketCapture, can only filter packets by IP address, MAC, and protocol. This makes collecting a targeted trace, sometimes needed when collecting traces on sensitive networks, impossible.

This is a request to add, at a minimum, the ability to filter packets by TCP port and UDP endpoint. Ideally, Windows inbox…

  12. OpenSSH on Windows should include ssh-copy-id

The OpenSSH distribution that comes with Windows as an optional component should contain ssh-copy-id to make copying public keys to remote systems easier than the sequence outlined on https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/openssh/openssh_keymanagement

  13. Free Technical Support for Students

It would be great if students could submit technical support requests for free, and if they are serious enough, get assistance with the issue for free.

    Backstory:
Why Give Out Software to Students and Charge Us When We Need Assistance? - I have been using Microsoft products for everything school related, but now I have an issue with my server, you want to charge $500 for assistance with something critical and can't fix ourselves. I think I made a big mistake trying to learn Microsoft for my career, because I wouldn't be having the issue I have now if I…

Hi, I have an idea for Windows 10.
Next to the copy option, the option to add to the copy (add to the clipboard) so that the previous data in the clipboard is not deleted.

  16. restore old posts from blogs.technet.com

blogs.technet.com had several valuable articles (ie. VMQ deep-dive,etc,etc) that were covering the lack of documentation in the official Product portal (docs.Microsoft.com / technet.microsoft.com) . since hte move to https://techcommunity.microsoft.com several of those articles are lost.

Please restore them or transfer the contents to docs.microsoft.com

  17. Storage migration service re-sync modified files during or after cut over

I setup a Server 2019 VM and migrated our old 2008R2 file server, to this server with the Storage migration services through Windows Admin Center.

It seems to work as designed and seems to be a great tool for admins.

However on our current production file server, the migration takes 7 days. Too long to perform it out of hours, and too long to downtime the server. The result is outdated files on the destination side. I haven't found a way with SMS to resolve the issues with latest files being left behind on the source machine.

    I'm not sure…

  18. [Bug] Windows Admin Center page keeps requesting credentials

The Windows Admin Center page keeps requesting credentials for the Windows Admin Center when adding computers or installing extensions, and it often does so twice in a row.

  19. RDP client: configuring source port

(Upvote please for the sake of flexibility and security)

Please allow configuring the client source port for RDP in stead of the currently random port selection.
In addition to changing RDP on the remote server. I want to limit connectivity except from specific ports at the client side to enforce security.
