General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. VR realistic game play

I would like to help on this idea. It goes like this, you have a building for people to go to in a city, the place has rooms that has these platforms you can run on like a treadmill but you have a safety vest on so you dont fall. Anyways it has it set up to where if u need to run in the game u can run as fast as you can move that treadmill, the difficulty can be setup for slower people to make it fair. Also if it can be a treadmill of some sort to…

System Insights - I have read your stuff about this new feature (WS2019) and would like to understand how it compares to ZABBIX. A white paper delivering such a comparison would be very useful.

  3. Basic Direct Access for Windows 10 PRO and home users.

It appears a feature of Windows server 2012 Essentials R2 has been removed from windows 10 PRO and Home editions. It worked until the latest upgrade last week. Previous page on this site does not show it not available except the advanced version. It worked till last week. It did have similar issues earlier in the year.

  4. Provide Service Fabric as a Native Feature

The tools for installing Service Fabric are really good, but if it was an optional native feature, it would help to create a Windows Server 2019 image with it enabled "from the start" via the features XML.

  7. add functionality to Test-NetConnection cmdlet to trace a route to a remote TCP port

Test-NetConnection does not allow to trace to a remote TCP port.
The ability to do this would greatly improve Window's ability to troubleshoot difficult networking setups with multiple firewalls in between two connection points.
This is especially true, if the traceroute works but the actual port has been blocked in between somewhere.

  8. Make LACP NIC teaming comply with LACP standard for NIC speeds (all same)

Currently LBFO using LACP allows the NICs to renegotiate to different speeds which is not allowed in LACP standard.

We've just had a 4 x 1Gb LACP team change to a 3 x 1Gb + 1 x 100 Mb team. LACP requires all link speeds are the same. If NIC was unable to stay at 1Gb, it should have been faulted and dropped from team. Allowing one NIC to drop to 100Mb reduced effective link speed to 100Mb. Gigabit standard requires (?) autonegotiation of individual link speeds - but LBFO should ensure compliance of team with LACP standard. This occurred…

  10. Fix Remote Desktop URI scheme

Full Disclosure: I'm the guy who added the URI parsing and connection scheme in CoRD. That was a feature I wanted, so I baked it when I started contributing to the development of the app 10 years ago. https://github.com/dorianj/CoRD/wiki/Command-Line-Use

The Current URI scheme looks like it was written by interns with no supervision. Either your engineers completely ignored RFC 3986, or they thought they were more clever than they really are. Chief among the trespasses is the lack of ability to use the hostname/IP address baked into the scheme, requiring the use of the "full address" parameter, which for some…

  12. Make Fixed Virtual Disks expandable or storage tier thin provisioning in Server editions

Virtual disks that are created with storage pools cannot be expanded when tiered storage is used. VDisks created with tiered storage must be created as fixed disks making it impossible to expand later. Either change the process so that tiered VDisks can be created as thin provisioned disks or a process that will allow the expansion for fixed VDisks. It is impossible to determine how large a file server will grow over a period of years and not practical to create 30 TB disks when you only start 5 TB of data. Disk expansion is a must for today's ever…

  13. Suggest to include the ability to record action the user makes on any Windows application (audio/visual) and be able to share with others

make it possible to record (audio/visual) screen content and share via other windows apps to others. Example; Click on record (visual/audio) button whatever content is on screen and add audio, then send e-ail with content to other user/s.

  15. Switch Independent Teaming

The standby NIC in a Windows Server Switch Independent teaming configuration results in applications receiving duplicate broadcasts or multicasts. This is incorrect design and make switch independent teaming unusable in many use cases. Broadcasts or multi-casts on the standby adapter should be discarded.

  18. Make Server Essentials 2016 Connector More Robust to Windows Upgrades

The Server Essentials Connector client often loses its connection to the server following a Windows Update. This is both frustrating if seen, or an issue if missed (if the icon is not always shown) as it can lead to backups not happening for a number of days. Normally it is then just a case of running the ClientDeploy app, but you have to know where to find this (it is not added to the all programs list).

Ideally the connector should be much more robust to Windows Updates and should simply "just work" but, if it does not connect it…

  19. Suggession to imporve Active Directory

There should be an Active Directory Object for main office and other/field locations, Members tab to add bulk users and a drop-down menu in every user account to simply choose which office do they belong to as well. Also, it would be awesome to have a drop-down menu for every user account to bind with domain-joined or non-domain joined PC.
This makes Active Directory and User management way easier, System Administrators can also keep a track of assigned devices to every user, change the location details easily of course for bulk users by creating an office location object and adding…
