General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  1. Windows Defender suffers from Decompression Bomb attack

Windows Defender suffers from a "Decompression Bomb" attack.

    Steps to reproduce:
    * In Windows 10, enable Windows Defender scanning of an archive via PowerShell:
    set-mppreference -disablearchivescanning $true

    * Create a file larger than the free space on %SystemDrive%, place the file in an archive (e.g. image.gz), place archive file on a USB drive, and plug drive in mounted to E:\.

    * Using either the Windows Defender GUI, command prompt, or PowerShell, scan the image.gz file. For example, with command prompt:
    "%programfiles%\Windows Defender\mpcmdrun" -scan -scantype 3 -file E:\image.gz

What will happen next is after a few minutes, Windows Defender will create…

  3. Schedule what days full backups occur and what days incremental backups occur

It should be simple to schedule in the GUI what days FULL backups occur - e.g. Sunday and what days incremental backups occur - e.g. Monday -Saturday. Again this should be in the GUI - no scripts, no powershell.

  4. Update the integrated windows server backup. It works well but not if you want to backup specific guest VMs at particular times.

Windows Server backup works well - HOWEVER it doesn't let you easily schedule specific guest VMs for backups at different times through the GUI. Please no powershell - just simple GUI. It should also make it easy to schedule other items to stop or start at the beginning and end of a backup job.

  5. Working automatic Removal of Entries in all Eventlogs after x days configured by GPOs

We need a working solution to automatically remove all entries in all eventlogs, not only for system, app, security, after several days, regardless how big the eventlog is. The limit should be configured with GPOs for Win 10 and Server 2016. At the moment all solutions in the Internet are not really working or are very painful. It will became important with the data privacy laws to have an easy reliable way to configure this.

  6. smtp in 1709

With Office 365, the need for a on-premise SMTP Server for relaying from on-premise devices that send email is pretty high. Having SMTP Server in the lightweight Windows Server 1709 would seem to be a desireable feature

  8. In Event Viewer the link by More Information: Event Log Online Help points to a non existing page:

The link is https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee958049.aspx which is a 404.

Please update Event Viewer to remove the link to Event Log Online Help or create the page proper.

  10. IP locks after x invalid login attempts

An attacker's IP should be blocked for the Remote Desktop Access after X invalid logins.
Best for a certain period of time.
(A user can also be deactivated for x minutes after X invalid login attempts)

We are seeing more and more server intrusion attempts with invalid usernames.

  11. 1709 WSUS client scan takes a long time and tries to connect to SLS.Update.Microsoft.com

Unlike the 1607 full GUI client that scan in a few seconds, all 1709 servers take extremely long time to scan against WSUS (which is running 1709 btw) and the logs show that they are trying to connect to SLS.update.microsoft.com which fails due to lack of internet connectivity.

  12. Use a numeric sort instead of a string sort on DNS date field

Whilst working through some of the DNS records for our network, we noticed we were seeing some records from 2015. We tried to sort the 'Date' column in ascending/descending order and found that the fields were not formatted as 'Date/Time' but rather as a text format as the timestamps were sorted in ascending order of the first 2 numbers of the date.
    As an example:
    Timestamp 1: 05/04/2015
    Timestamp 2: 01/02/2017
    Timestamp 3: 15/03/2016
    Timestamp 4: 19/06/2015

When sorted in ascending order by timestamp, the DNS records SHOULD be organised in the following format:
    1: 05/04/2015
    2: 19/06/2015
    3: 15/03/2016 …

  14. Ensure that NTFS rights function identically whether using UNC path or mapped drive to same location

I have been redirected here by recommendation of MSFT CSG in response to post on the Windows Server forum here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4d27b27b-5354-413f-8eeb-48ae9fb1e795/ntfs-rights-unc-vs-mapped-explorer-vs-command-prompt?forum=winserverfiles. Apparently, my question has exceeded the limits of "how do I do this?" and entered the realm of "why does Windows behave inconsistently?", which I call a bug.

    Scope
The behavior below is the same for at least Server 2008 R2 & 2012 R2, both with Windows 7 workstation. I have not tested elsewhere.

    Scenario
User has only traverse & permissions NTFS rights at root of share but full share-level permissions. User has full access to a subfolder…

  15. Don't delete deactivated Inboxrules in Outlook

If you have deactivated Inboxrules in Outlook your administrator cannot see the them. Also, if he changes one activated rule or create a new one, all the deactivated rules will be deleted.

  16. Add basic image editing to snipping tool

Snipping tool would really benefit from basic image editing options like drawing straight lines squares or circles to highlight or emphasise parts of the captured screen section. Similar to MS Paint drawing capabilities.
Would be really great if that functionality would be added or at least a button to open the snip inside image editor like MS Paint.

  17. Give option to uncheck "Automatically upgrade any superseded version of this application" for Available deployments to Device Collections

Give SCCM administrators the option to uncheck "Automatically upgrade any superseded version of this application" for Available deployments to Device Collections. This option is available for user collection deployments, which makes no sense on why you would not give the same option on Available deployments to Device Collections. The option is grayed out and there is no way to uncheck it.

  19. Please include the same accessibility support in to Windows Server Core as in the rest of Windows. I am blind and need Narrator.

Include Narrator or maybe a program on Windows 10 to allow configuration of a new server core installation over the same network. The problem is that I am a completely blind network systems engineer and I require access to Server core. Microsoft has made great increases in their accessibility on the client side but they have never considered the needs of blind technology professionals on the server side.I don't know how Narrator could be available directly on Server Core or if it could be some kind of add-on that worked over RDP or if there coud be some kidn of…

  20. Monitor Windows Server status

I work in a software company as a systems engineer for many years, and I always had a problem: "How do I track the status of all Windows servers that install, some of which are of primary importance that they are always very efficient and online?"
I started searching online, and actually there are several services which offer a monitoring system. But they all have the same problem, or are very confusing, or require the opening of some doors or cost absurd figures.
Then I began to search through the Windows Server tools, but nothing.

    It was essential that it…
