General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

  2. Query Optimize Win32_Product without Side-Effects

    In https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa394378.aspx

Warning Win32_Product is not query optimized. Queries such as "select * from Win32_Product where (name like 'Sniffer%')" require WMI to use the MSI provider to enumerate all of the installed products and then parse the full list sequentially to handle the “where” clause. This process also initiates a consistency check of packages installed, verifying and repairing the install. With an account with only user privileges, as the user account may not have access to quite a few locations, may cause delay in application launch and an event 11708 stating an installation failure. For more information, see KB Article…

  3. Fix startmenu when using fullscreen setting (Windows Server 2016)

When using the startmenu in fullscreen mode, the start menu won't open anymore after a restart. When you disable and re-enable fullscreen mode, it works once again until the next restart.

  5. Print Spooler Isolation

Ever since Windows server 2012 we have had printer driver isolation, but there is a need for print spooler isolation. This would allow for an individual spooler for a printer to be stopped and the jobs deleted without affecting all other printers on the print server. This could be done in a method where the main print spooler service spawns child instances for each print and then through an api you would be able to stop and start these child instances.

  6. Make the eraser in OneNote more efficient

    Hello everbody,

if I wrote something with the Apple Pencil or another Stylus on my iPad Pro and i want to erase something, it would be great if it is possilbe to select a color that i want to erase. The option to make the eraser bigger or smaller would be great, too.

    Best regards,

    Alex

  7. A faster way to write again after using the eraser in OneNote

    Hello everybody,

I am using the iPad Pro and if i want to erase something I have written with the Apple Pencil or another Stylus and i want to write again with another color, it should be possible to click directly on the color that I want and if I do this the last pen i used should be selected automatically in the color i selected.
You see it is a simple comfort function and would be great.

    Best regards,

    Alex

  8. In Windows if you want to look at your DCIM folder, the oldest data shows up first and it takes years to load the newest. Reverse please

In Windows if you want to look at your DCIM folder, the oldest data shows up first and it takes years to load the newest. Wouldnt it be better to see the newest first? Cause i am sure in most cases you want the new data as quick as possible

  10. RSAT tools to support below the typical N-1 level

Often many of us work in an environment that is evolving to the latest OS, but perhaps technology or development of internal applications have held or slowed us from updating these to current standards. We are encouraged to use RSAT tools to manage these hosts and services, but these tools are only backwards compatible by N-1.

This means that with a Windows 10 (current build) laptop, which will use RSAT for 2016, I cannot manage my older Windows 2012 or even 2008r2 hosts. I then have to either use a VM which is running Win7 or 8.1 with RSAT to…

  12. Problems with March 2017 Security Rollup

The moderator from the server forum suggested I post here (please see https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/a894761b-963e-4e4a-a309-d28999209448/march-2017-security-updates-breaks-ntlm-authentication-of-samba-shares-over-netbios?forum=winserversecurity).

We had a production down weekend after installing Microsoft's security March 2017 rollup. This question is to help us understand what was included in the March rollup that broke production in order that we can properly document the workaround.

    Scenario:

    1. Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers.
    2. March 2017 security rollup applied.
    3. SAMBA shares hosted on AIX using NTLM authentication stopped working, giving access denied (client message)
Error on AIX host is: "FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS"
Error on AIX host is: "SPNEGO login failed: NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT" …

  16. Removing Command Prompt is meanest MSFT idea ever. Roast in ****!

Do not remove Command Prompt, because millions of people will not ever be able to learn the terse, unintuitive, weird, creepy language of Powershell.
This makes computers 80% less useful to a large number of people.
    You are nuts!

  17. Change the use of hyperlinks in the graphical user interface

In my opinion Microsoft is following a wrong paradigm when it comes to providing server admins with context based background information while working on a server desktop.
It is regarding the use of referrals in the interface to sources on the internet in order to provide the administrator with more information. I know that, when Microsofts recommendation is followed and the core version is chosen, this is no issue at all, but since several server implementations still require the full graphical version (e.g. Exchange Server 2016) and many IT organisations still choose to use RDS for server administration, many admins…
