General Feedback

Do you have an idea or suggestion based on your experience with Windows Server? We would love to hear it! Please take a few minutes to submit your idea in the one of the forums available on the right or vote up an idea submitted by another Windows Server customer. All of the feedback you share in these forums is monitored and reviewed by the Microsoft engineering teams responsible for building Windows Server. Suggestions can apply to both released and Technical Preview versions of Windows Server.

Important:

1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)-related feedback must be provided in their UV site: https://remotedesktop.uservoice.com/forums/266795-remote-desktop-services-for-enterprises

2. Requests for feature changes around the end-user experience, such as desktop shell, start menu, individual consumer apps, etc. must be provided through the Windows 10 Feedback Hub tool. We have no ownership of these types of non-Windows Server components.

3. This forum (General Feedback) is used for any broad feedback related to Windows Server. Feedback for specific areas like Storage, Networking, Virtualization, Nano Server, etc., should be provided in one of the forums available on the right. It is not for bug filings. If you find a bug with Windows Server please open a support case at https://support.microsoft.com and report it – these cases are free.

If you have technical questions or need help with Windows Server, please visit our “TechNet Forums” https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?category=windowsserver

  1. Allow Windows Server to mount BLOB as a disk

Partners like SoftNAS and Nasuni allow you to connect to Azure BLOB storage and share it as a disk. This allows for massive scalability. Unfortunately, these are very expensive solutions when we are just looking for a simple, massively scalable Windows File Server. Please add the ability to mount BLOB (thin provisioned) to a Windows Server VM in Azure and share that capacity. (Either that or enhance Azure Files to more than 5TB and add NTFS permissions).

    • unable to change WINS Server IP Binding in Windows Server 2016.

Unable to change WINS Server, IP Binding in Windows Server 2016. In the MMC of WINS Server, you can see an IP Address which suggests that the WINS Service is only listing on this Network Adapter. Even you change the Network Adapter metric, the IP will be not changed in the WINS MMC Gui. It's only changing, if you disable the used interface. With a netstate you can see that the WINS Service is listening on all Interfaces. This is confusing

      • Bug Report: Powershell add-ipamaddress cmdlet does not commit to DHCP or DNS

The powershell add-ipamaddress cmdlet takes a number of parameters related to dhcp/dns, such as dhcp server, dns zones, etc... but does not sync this information to dhcp or dns.

The cmdlet is mostly useless without the ability to register this info automatically.

        • ADFS WID Port 80 Requirement

ADFS WID replication requires port 80 to be open. This is not outlined anywhere in this document: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/identity/ad-fs/deployment/best-practices-securing-ad-fs

          It is outlined here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/adfs/set-adfssyncproperties?view=win10-ps

"Note: The primary server must be accessible via HTTP on port 80 from the secondary server."

Please add this note to the best practices document.

          • Not able to add Notes / annotation on Hyper-V VM

            Hello,

Is there any way possible to add Annotations on Newly created Hyper-V VM (either using Failover Cluster Manager OR Hyper-V Manager).

Annotations are the details which would be helpful to know the exact reason of creation of the Hyper-V VM.

            Regards,
            Sud

            • Remove/hide Power button/icon from the Start Menu

Add a way, preferably via GPO, to remove/hide the Power Button from the Start Menu, or a way to move the Log Off action to the Power Button.

When you enable "Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep..." in a GPO. and remove the disconnect action, the Power Button still remains, and just opens up a blank menu. And I don't want my users to just see a useless button in the Start Menu.

Technet where I raised the issue: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/2cf3cbb9-73b3-45ef-8897-54896d0eda2b/removehide-the-power-button-in-windows-server-2016?forum=ws2016

                • Remove Xbox Live related services from Server 2016

IMHO "Xbox Live Game Save" service left in a product aimed for corporate use is a bit embarrassing.

                  • Active Directory dsa.msc Attribute Editor only if Object not searched

if i open an computer object directly in the dsa.msc there is a tab called "Attribute Editor". If i open an object over the search function there is no tab "Attribute Editor". Bug or Feature? I can´t understand the sens of the difference.

                    • Remove Cortana/Defender/XBox/UAC and the others bloatware

Please don't tell me about core version or nano!

We need a light weight GUI to speed up the settings and keep monitored the logs and other things. Please move all these stuff to "Add roles and Features"

                      Do you remember windows NT?

We don't need the heavyweight of all bloated stuff of windows 10.

                      This is a server.

                      Thank you

                          • Windows Server 2016 licencing model issues

For me I'm not looking to install as many vm's as i can possibly do. I'm looking to allocate more ram and processing power per VM to improve performance of older apps. Microsoft penalise users in this scenario which means i have less budget to licence development servers ect. I have 2 new dual 12 core servers so 48 cores. I have 8 VM's total and unlikely to need more. However I'm forced to licence 48 cores which is not cheap. Microsoft is assuming users are going to install as many VM's as possible which is not the case.....

                            • Windows 2016 start menu search on GUI should be as comprehensive as Windows 10 and Windows 2012R2

When I hit start and type "Active", for example, the start menu correctly finds "Active Directory Users and Computers", "Active Directory Domains and Trusts", etc. on Windows 10 and Windows 2012R2.
that is NOT the case in Windows 2016 TP5. I have to type in "administrative" to get to "Windows Administrative Tools" and then run my mmc.

I don't know if it is a setting I should enable (maybe Cortana), or I have to wait for some indexing to finish (I've already waited waaay to long; besides Windows 2012R2 does not have this index-wait-time) for this comprehensive search to happen,…

                              • Set task manager to show total network percent of total capacity

I love Win Server 2012 R2 but HATE the sliding scale for network utilization. Every time I want only % of total bandwidth. If I have a 1GBit connection or a 10Gbit - I want to know if I'm using 1% of it or 15% or whatever. I don't know anyone with a 7.48gbit nic so the math isn't hard. The sliding scale is what I consider good for sleazy sales and marketing departments. PLEASE give us an OPTION to have your autoscale network throughput and a useful percent of total throughput like it had before.

2016 Server Core and Nano don't have the ability to add-windowsfeature smtp-server. I feel the SMTP feature would lend itself well to the lightweight nature of Core and Nano.

I am working on a new lockdown group policy that will be used for our future Windows 2016 XenApp servers.

As this will be used for a lot of users, certain things will need to be locked down. For example the Settings need to be locked down in the same way as it possible with Control Panel.

I want to be able to manage what settings is visible in Settings with GPO.

We cannot allow users on a shared RDSH server to install windows update, add VPN connection, check what application is installed etc etc.
                                    With Control Panel it was…

Get back possibility to switch between Server Core and GUI

Since TP3 it is no longer possible to switch between the different user interface types. I think it is absolutely mandatory to get this option back untill RTM of Server 2016

                                      • Ink And Handwriting Services

Noticed that in Windows Server 2016 TP5 with latest cumulative update (KB3158987) Ink And Handwriting Services feature is missing:
                                        Get-WindowsFeature | Where-Object {$_.Name -like '*ink*'}
returns no results... Looking at the files on the disk drive (C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink) it seem that feature is actually installed. Some applications which relay on this feature fail during installation/instantiation since they determine feature is not installed. There was not mention in the release notes of the TP4 and TP5 in which this feature is no longer present (it was still present in TP3). Please fix this or suggest a workaround.

                                        • Bug: Task Scheduler CalendarTrigger Repetition not working in Server 2016TP5

Scheduled tasks on the current TP5 of Windows Server 2016, which have a CalendarTrigger with repetition configured, don't seem to trigger and cannot be started manually.
The same trigger without repetition (e.g. after unchecking the "Repeat task every:" checkbox in taskschd.msc) works correctly.
A TimeTrigger with the same repetition configuration works, too.
taskschd.msc calculates and displays the next runtime correctly.

When I try to start such a task manually in taskschd.msc, a message box appears (running any other task works):
de-DE: "Der Aufgabenplanungsdienst ist nicht verfügbar. Die Aufgabenplanung wird erneut versuchen, eine Verbindung herzustellen."
en-US: "Task Scheduler service is not…
