  1. Bring back LastSuccessfulSync

LastSuccessfulSync was removed from Windows 2016 version of Work Folders. This is used in reports to find clients that have fallen out of sync. Or provide an alternative way to monitor when clients quit syncing.

  2. DFS Replication and Deduplication Integration

The deduplication feature makes Windows Server an attractive OS to use for a backup repository. There is just one issue...replication. One could use DFS Replication to replicate the backup files off-site. But, DFS-R rehydrates the files, and then uses it's own compression, to transmit them. This requires allocating space to DFS-R for staging. Plus, the DFS-R compression is likely not as efficient as deduplication.

It would be great if DFS-R could be configured to replicate the already deduplicated blocks. This would provide the most efficient trasmission while eliminating the need for separate staging for DFS-R (in this use case).

  3. Official support for ReFS on SAN volumes (iSCSI and FC)

Official support for running ReFS on iSCSI san volumes on enterprise san.
There are so many reasons for running ReFS over NTFS, it's a shame it's not officially supported on SAN storage volumes.

  4. Support ReFS Volumes with FSRM

I'd like to see FSRM support ReFS Volumes, mainly for the classification and reporting functions.

  5. Add shared VHD support to client OS

It is just one filter driver needed in the stack that will enable shared VHD (svhdxflt.sys). This feature would really help IT Pros to play with scenarios, where shared VHD is needed (Storage Replica scenarios, SAN simulations etc.)

  6. Async/Callback APIs for drive/directory/file querying

Currently there are only blocking apis for querying the file system (enumerate list of files in a directory, get names etc)

This is problematic when disks are asleep, remote, slow etc

  7. VM Balance SiteAware And StrechedCluster

I think maybe VM Balance Should aware SiteAware and storage SiteAware
if VM Balace can aware, the StrechedCluster can autoBalance in
    localsite
if not can aware, can not use vm balance for StrechedCluster, because may balance will move an local vm to another site ,will make csv redirect

  10. NVMe over Fabric "Target" server for Windows Server 2016

    Hi all.

HPE (and other vendors like Tyan) are producing exciting pieces of kit like the DL385 G10 1-2 processor AMD servers that can stack 24 NVMe drives into themselves and ******** a whole lot of (5) network cards into their PCIe slots. Currently MS can use servers like this in it's S2D implementations but I'm wondering why they should limit themselves to homogenous environments like that when we can deploy them into Software Defined SANs as well?

Enter the NVMeoF "Target" server for Windows Server 2016 where you can deploy your server onto any of these target hardware platforms…

  11. Windows Server 2016 failover cluster fileserver role, configurable authentication domain.

    Hi all,
I wanted to put this suggestion forward because it seems like a feature that Microsoft, and its customers, would be very interested in.

MS seems to want to enter the Software Defined Storage and Software Defined SAN space with it's design decisions in WS 2016 and this puts it up against the likes of traditional vendors such as IBM, EMC and Netapp. This would place commodity hardware at the same level of these NAS / SANS with WS 2016 running over it and for the vast majority the OS can handle those demands with its new features such…

  14. Storage Spaces Direct Stretch Cluster support

It would be extremely advantageous for S2D to support Stretch Clusters. Maybe implement it by allowing the creation of multiple, site aware storage pools (by leveraging the new failure domain features).

Combining this with Storage replica would enable multi-site, highly available VM's without the need for any shared storage what so ever.

  15. Have a file extension whitelist for deduplication

I'd like to specify only certain file types to be deduplicated, as our users tend to copy around big movie files, but I still want Windows search to work for regular files (which are also small enough to not bother with deduplicating).

See also the folder whitelist https://windowsserver.uservoice.com/forums/295056-storage/suggestions/7961025-de-duplication-feature-should-be-enabled-on-direct and https://windowsserver.uservoice.com/forums/295056-storage/suggestions/17888647-make-windows-search-service-work-with-data-dedupli

  16. Get-Volume displays exFAT file system type incorrectly as 'Unknown'

    Bug:

When a removable drive is formatted with exFAT, the Get-Volume cmdlet incorrectly displays the FileSystemType property as 'Unknown.' The FileSystem property correctly shows 'exFAT', it is the FileSystemType property (two different properties) which incorrectly says 'Unknown.'

    To Reproduce:

Format a USB flash drive with exFAT, then run:

    Get-Volume

    Get-Volume | Select *

    Observed On:

Windows 10 Pro version 1703 with PoSh version 5.1.15063.413.

  17. Work Folders - Make Builtin One Drive Client compatible with Work Folders

it should be great to replace Work Folders client by builtin one drive client application in windows 10 and make Work folder Server able to respond to OneDrive Clients. As the result :
    - One feature to develop and maintain (one drive client)
    - future features of one drive compatible with Work Folders Server (for example : OneDrive On-Demand)
    - Less resources used on computers

  19. Don't work Remove-PhysicalDisk in Windows Server 2016 for Storage Spaces

Remove-PhysicalDisk doesn't work as needed in Windows Server 2016 (like in 2012 R2).

We have Scale-Out File Server on Windows Server 2016. One storage pool with tiering and two way mirroring Virtual Disk. We have free space in pool specially for rebuild (size for more then 4 disk failure). We put one disk as Retire and took out from enclosure. Disk was Lost communication and Virtual Disk auto rebuild.
VirtualDisk shows as Healthy and OK and Repair runs without issues.
We add new HDD to enclosure and add it to pool. All looks good, healthy and OK.
    But Remove-PhysicalDisk for…

  20. Bug: $ErrorActionPreference ignored by New-SmbShare

Setting $ErrorActionPreference to Stop is ignored by New-SmbShare (and possibly other CIM wrapped functions) in specific use cases:

    • Run within Windows ISE: No problem

    • Invoked using powershell.exe -File argument: No problem

    • Called with explicit -ErrorAction Stop: No problem

    • Run within PowerShell Prompt (dot-sourced): $ErrorActionPreference is ignored

    • Invoked using powershell.exe -Command argument: $ErrorActionPreference is ignored

This can be tested with the following script (test.ps1):

    $ErrorActionPreference = "Stop"
    New-SmbShare -Name "Test" -Path "C:\NonExistingPath"
    Write-Host "Should not be reached"

The following call shows the error "The system cannot find the file specified", but also shows "Should never be reached", which is incorrect:
    powershell.exe…
