  1. Introduce "aggregate views" in DFS that represent directories from multiple locations in a single folder

It would be useful in large file server installations to be able to have the contents of multiple folders, even from multiple servers, merged into one view. \CORPFILE1\HOMEDIRS could provide an aggregate view for \FILESERVER1\HOMEDIRS, \FILESERVER2\HOMEDIRS, \FILESERVER3\HOMEDIRS

This introduces an issue during file creation in this structure - where does the new file or folder go? A Windows Explorer extension could prompt for creation target, though there may be more elegant solutions.

  2. Storage Migration Service: Merge source shares on one target volume

If the shares do not have the same name, why not allow merging shares on several volumes in source servers into one volume in the destination.

  3. Feature Request --- Option to avoid Adding a Disk Automatically to Storage Pool.

Wanted to advise on this Auto pull of a New Disk in to Storage Pool and options to Get a Disk out of the Pool & back to the local system.

                So far, I’ve checked in MSDN (How-to-remove-disks-from-primordial-pool) but it seems like currently there’s no option to do such;

    My request is for a solution that enables to;

    1. Skip disks out of the Pool Collection when enabling S2D.

    2. Add new disks to the system with a choice of whether or not to put them in S2D or Pool.

    3. Pull an existing disk(s) out of a Primordial Pool.

    So far the…

  4. Implementing Key Based Folder Shares

Folder Shares requires always a user and password. Implementig a key based share can increase the security of some very important data.

Authenticating from an other windows mashine or a linux mashine to mount shared Folders.

  5. How about we implement Disk Quotas, not just on individual user accounts but Security Groups within Active directory

Within the File Server Resource Manager, we should be able to implement a quota on a file path for a Security Group of Users instead of Individual users,

  6. disk error ID7 on a storage server, help us find the disk....

At the moment we have to delve in the registry and understand how SCSI enumerates devices. What a mess.
Somehow we need to be able to easily link the harddisk mentioned in the event log with a real disk that needs to be changed. (put the serial number in the event log?)

  7. Enable high speed backup, e.g. via NDMP, for large Windows fileservers

File-level backup is a big pain-point for large Windows fileserver (5-20TB). Whenever we have a need to provide a fileserver > 10TB, we switch to NetApp - only backup of the backup issue.

It would be a big help if Windows Server would provide a blocklevel / highspeed / NDMP like interface to backup huge amounts in a decent time.

  8. More Performance Counters

Include more performance counters about storage cache hits and misses, and tier hits and misses.
Currently there is the daily tier report in the event log but not much else.
Combined with the ability to adjust cache sizes.

  9. Give some sort of gui representation of defrag

With the other defrag programs there is a gui to give you an idea of how much defragging was remaining and how much progress is made. It would help you to know if defrag is stuck.

  10. Workfolders edit file directly from app (iOS)

The current workfolders app 2.0.1 allow us to copy files to and from Workfolders but it's far from all major apps for file storage that allow edit directly from the app.
It will greatly benefit the users if this option is added.

  12. Get volume type to differentiate which is local disk, clustered disk, or network share, etc.

From Windows Explorer, besides every volume letters, we have the volume (network location) Type: Local Disk / CD Drive / Clustered Disk / Network Drive. Would like to have a simple powershell command get it.

  13. Add Work Folders support for Linux [Separated Idea]

Add Work Folders support for Linux

MSFT NOTE: This idea was separated from http://windowsserver.uservoice.com/forums/295056-storage/suggestions/8212707-work-folder-support-for-android-os-x-linux, which originally contained multiple ideas. Please always supply only one idea in a given posting, so that your supporters and Microsoft can evaluate them easily as single units.

  14. Allow Both Sides to Be Active Simultaneously

I'd love to get rid of DFSR, (even though the improvements are making it better to use - thanks Ned!) However we can't implement Storage Replica because so many of our scenarios require the data to be manipulated from both sides.

  15. Official support for ReFS on SAN volumes (iSCSI and FC)

Official support for running ReFS on iSCSI san volumes on enterprise san.
There are so many reasons for running ReFS over NTFS, it's a shame it's not officially supported on SAN storage volumes.

  16. NVMe over Fabric "Target" server for Windows Server 2016

    Hi all.

HPE (and other vendors like Tyan) are producing exciting pieces of kit like the DL385 G10 1-2 processor AMD servers that can stack 24 NVMe drives into themselves and ******** a whole lot of (5) network cards into their PCIe slots. Currently MS can use servers like this in it's S2D implementations but I'm wondering why they should limit themselves to homogenous environments like that when we can deploy them into Software Defined SANs as well?

Enter the NVMeoF "Target" server for Windows Server 2016 where you can deploy your server onto any of these target hardware platforms…

  18. Transfer rate on Windows native backup

Windows Backup would be better if I could actually see the transfer rate so it is easier to calculate if the backup is running faster or slower as you tweak things.

  19. Get-Disk cmdlet in server 2016 reporting incorrectly

As of the December update rollup, the version of powershell and winrm 5 on windows server 2016 (all skus) still reports the healthstatus and operationalstatus columns when running "get-disk" incorrectly.
running a get-disk on a healthy server produces warnings but running the command remotely and piping the output to a 2012R2 server (with either winrm 4 or 5 installed) shows correctly as healthy. The same occurs in the reverse (healthy 2012r2 results parsed as warnings if output to 2016 console. Likely a simple fix. please address

  20. Storage spaces direct with Nano Server unable to Extend Volume

With storage spaces direct using Nano Server, I have added additional nodes to the SoFS cluster. This has allowed me to grow the storage pool and the virtual disk. However the volume still reports its original size and it cannot be extended. In WS2012R2 you would have done this with tools like DiskPart or disk Management neither of these work with Nano
