  1. Storage Spaces Direct - Why the tiny capacity?

I don't understand why the new 2019 Storage Spaces Direct won't even support a single 90 bay JBOD loaded with 8TB drives.

I am currently testing the addition of that unit into our infrastructure using regular storage spaces. It runs fine. Dual Parity writes of 75 MB/sec are sad, but Mirror writes at 1,600 MB/sec are really nice. Everything seems to work fine.

I've looked at the Windows 2019 limits, and the storage spaces direct raw capacity per physical server is 400 TB. What drives this? I'm trying to sell the idea of turning a customer's 1.5 PB storage space…

  3. Can Windows Storage Server Migration Cutover feature move a Domain Controller?

The New Windows Storage Server Migration Service has a Cutover feature. It will move the network name and address of the old server to the new server. Can this also move a server that is a Domain Controller?

  4. storage spaces is bugged Error 0x32 when creating a pool

Storage Spaces is bugged and will return error code 0x32 with GUI or Powershell

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12438/windows-10-storage-spaces

The issue is persistent and reproducible in following releases:
    Windows 10 pro:

    1607, 1703,1709,1803

    It does work in 1511!

  5. Add Credential parameter to PowerShell DFSN cmdlets

It would be useful to have a Credential parameter on the DFSN cmdlets so a PSCredential object can be passed to run commands under a different user than the one that launched the PowerShell session.

Ideally, it should also properly handle [System.Management.Automation.PSCredential]::Empty

  7. Windows Server 2016 failover cluster fileserver role, configurable authentication domain.

    Hi all,
I wanted to put this suggestion forward because it seems like a feature that Microsoft, and its customers, would be very interested in.

MS seems to want to enter the Software Defined Storage and Software Defined SAN space with it's design decisions in WS 2016 and this puts it up against the likes of traditional vendors such as IBM, EMC and Netapp. This would place commodity hardware at the same level of these NAS / SANS with WS 2016 running over it and for the vast majority the OS can handle those demands with its new features such…

  9. Bug: $ErrorActionPreference ignored by New-SmbShare

Setting $ErrorActionPreference to Stop is ignored by New-SmbShare (and possibly other CIM wrapped functions) in specific use cases:

    • Run within Windows ISE: No problem

    • Invoked using powershell.exe -File argument: No problem

    • Called with explicit -ErrorAction Stop: No problem

    • Run within PowerShell Prompt (dot-sourced): $ErrorActionPreference is ignored

    • Invoked using powershell.exe -Command argument: $ErrorActionPreference is ignored

This can be tested with the following script (test.ps1):

    $ErrorActionPreference = "Stop"
    New-SmbShare -Name "Test" -Path "C:\NonExistingPath"
    Write-Host "Should not be reached"

The following call shows the error "The system cannot find the file specified", but also shows "Should never be reached", which is incorrect:
    powershell.exe…

  10. BUG: Storage Module : Get-Volume cmdlet with the -FileSystemLabel

The FileSystemLabel switch won't find volumes if they have [ ]'s in the name
    e.g.
    Get-Volume -FileSystemLabel '[PAGEFILE]'

Can't seem to find away to escape them for it to find it.

Have got round it with a Where-Object
    Get-Volume | Where-Object { $_.FileSystemLabel -eq '[PAGEFILE]' }

But I thought I would flag it

  11. in a DR secnario where a site is complete down, the ability to reverse SR replication via powershell is not applicable

Currently with Storage Replica, you can reverse replication via powershell as described here (second form the bottom): https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-docs/storage/storage-replica/storage-replica-known-issues

However, in a DR scanario where the initial source site/node is completely down, the ability to reverse SR replication via powershell is not applicable.

  12. File Server Resource Manager

    Hi

Looks like there is a bug in the File Server Resource Manager modules.

    Windows 2012 R2 - fully patched march 2016

When creating a new FSRMFileScreenTemplate, it defaults to active instead of passive, and I can't change it to passive.
    Example:
New-FsrmFileScreenTemplate -name test -IncludeGroup test -Notification test
This results in an active template. The command has an -active switch - which cannot be set to $false, but no -passive switch.
Setting the property afterwards to $false doesn't change it in the GUI - it is still active.

Had to use the old filescrn.exe utility to set the template…

  14. IOP's - u need 2 look @ this in more details

    Windows-Feedback:?contextid=67&feedbackid=a770e43b-c1b3-4792-b825-78eada1921f0&form=1&src=2

Microsoft is not taking this iop's this seriously, and most of the time it's pointed out that windows is the problem, but windows was never written for this kind of scenario, yet Microsoft have not step up to address this problem, they just depend on others to find solution to this problem.

  17. Abstract Storage Replica from the connection point

By putting the CAS server between the client and the mailbox this allows for the Exchange DAG to be replicated in 2 or more places but all traffic to the active storage location abstracted through the CAS server. This same concept in storage would allow all but one storage node to fail but the middleman would direct traffic to the surviving node. This could facilitate seamless failover between datacenters and remove any needs for an active/active concept in storage replica. The Exchange team nailed this concept and it would be great to see it brought to storage.

  18. Remove failed drives from backup catalog

There is no possibility to remove failed drives log entries in Window Server Backup GUI. Removing drive (volume backup) from backup schedule should remove this drivers log entries in backup catalog.
