  1. de-duplication feature should be enabled on directory based (not volume or disk based)

de-duplication should be able to be enabled on directory based (unlike the current volume based approach). Currently we can enable it on a volume basis and we can exclude some directories. Especially some applications make big log files on OS drive which contains lots of duplicated data inside. We can compress those drives by enabling compress feature checkbox but as the compression works on file basis we loose so much space for duplicated log content. For example our veeam backup software logs which are located in C:\Programdata\Veeam folder is nearly 40GB. This can ve reduced to 20Gb with compression enabled…

  2. Enable CSV read cache in combination with Tiering

CSV read cache is a cool feature, unfortunately it can't be used in combination with Tiering. Would be great to enhance a tiered space with the speed of a memory cache as well.

  3. Just one SSD for write-back cache, or when Tiering in Storage SPaces

It is painful that you can use SSD write-back cache just when Tiering is used. And when Tiering is used, same column size needs to be used for SSDs and HDDs, then its kinda expensive.

  4. Enable read cache for all storage type with local ssd/nvme

Add ReadCache for storage with SSD/NVME , so each host can allocate local storage for read cache ,no matter what storage type its hosting vm on , this will help accelerate workload not on high performance backend

  5. Add and Remove SSD for WB Cache and dynamic scaling size of WB Cache

Feature to change size of WB Cache for any VirtualDisk with using existing SSD Disks. Like LSI do on several RAID Controllers.

  6. Boot from SMB

Booting from non-local storage provides a method to quickly replace a failed server without the need to rebuild the operating system. This practice is common where a SAN is available in order to boot from FCoE, FC, or iSCSI. Would like to see the same capability using SMB.

  7. Introduce "aggregate views" in DFS that represent directories from multiple locations in a single folder

It would be useful in large file server installations to be able to have the contents of multiple folders, even from multiple servers, merged into one view. \\CORPFILE1\HOMEDIRS could provide an aggregate view for \\FILESERVER1\HOMEDIRS, \\FILESERVER2\HOMEDIRS, \\FILESERVER3\HOMEDIRS

This introduces an issue during file creation in this structure - where does the new file or folder go? A Windows Explorer extension could prompt for creation target, though there may be more elegant solutions.

  8. Scale out general purpose file server

I just watched the SMB Direct Ignite presentation on Channel 9. Really cool stuff. I would like to use the SMB Direct solution to build a general purpose scale out file server and not just to store VMs. With 2012 R2, Microsoft did not recommend the scale out file server solution using a shared SAS fabric as a general purpose file server because of the limitations with the Cluster File system. Now that ReFS is being used as the clustered file system, has this limitation been lifted? If so, have improvements been made to ReFS in Windows Server 2016 to…

  9. File tiering statistics

In 2012 R2, tiering statistics in Storage Spaces are only provided when the file is pinned to a specific tier. It would be beneficial to know how much of a file is on each tier when it's managed automatically.

  10. Storage Replica block deduplication for async

Blocks in the replication log volume could be buffered, deduped and compressed before being sent to an async replica to minimize network link utilization. Example if we would be replicating to Azure public cloud.

  11. Storage Spaces Tiering and QoS Integration

From what I understand so far, SOFS Storage QoS operates independently from Storage Spaces automated tiering.

Storage Spaces automated tiering optimization process should take into consideration VHDXs QoS policies in order to meet the IOPS objective. If tiering only looks at the number of time a certain piece of data has been accessed between the tier optimization executions, the data could possibly be not placed on the optimal tier to meet the performance target.

If the SSD tier could be balanced fairly between VHDXs based on QoS policy targets, that would most likely ensure more consistent IO performance.

  12. Storage Spaces Virtual Disk Profiling and QoS Integration

When building SOFS QoS policies, it would be nice to get an IO capacity profile of the normalized IOPS for the volume from which the policies would derive from instead of manually benchmarking the volume.

i.e. Spaces could determine that a volume has a capacity of 50K IOPS. When creating a single instance policy, the upper limit would automatically be 50K IOPS, same thing for multi-instance policy.

Having some mechanism to track how much IO capacity has been allocated out of the “pool” would simplify management, possibly similar to the way thin provisioning works. You can see how much is…

  14. Abstract Storage Replica from the connection point

By putting the CAS server between the client and the mailbox this allows for the Exchange DAG to be replicated in 2 or more places but all traffic to the active storage location abstracted through the CAS server. This same concept in storage would allow all but one storage node to fail but the middleman would direct traffic to the surviving node. This could facilitate seamless failover between datacenters and remove any needs for an active/active concept in storage replica. The Exchange team nailed this concept and it would be great to see it brought to storage.

  15. Remove failed drives from backup catalog

There is no possibility to remove failed drives log entries in Window Server Backup GUI. Removing drive (volume backup) from backup schedule should remove this drivers log entries in backup catalog.
