  1. add a comments field only visible in the DNS Manager console.

This would help with DNS Management by having the ability to add notes to static A records and aliases

  2. DirectAccess better visibility of connection interface

it is hard to tell which IPv6 interface DirectAccess is using to connect to the infrastructure. now you have to run netsh on httpstunnel and teredo and 6 to 4 to have some "educated guess" about which one is the one chosen for DA.

we should be able to easily identify which interface (native or tunnel) is being utilized for DA communication on the client. the server GUI shows it already.

  3. DirectAccess over Native IPv6 Internet

I read somewhere that DirectAccess ALWAYS uses transition technologies (Teredo,6 to 4, IPHTTPS) for client to DA connection, EVEN WHEN both DA server and DA client have native IPv6 public addresses.

in case it is true, I believe we should let the native IPv6 be the 1st priority of the connection security rules rather than the Tunneled ones.

  4. DirectAccess should support multiple CA

if the customer wants to upgrade or change the CA, he needs to bring in all the remote computers and do a GPO refresh on-premises; otherwise the moment the new CA is input into the configuration of DA server, the clients which are still using the old CA are kicked out of DA.

we need a process for such transition, in case of an expired or compromised CA, to let the clients smoothly transition into the new CA without the requirement of them comping onsite for a GPO refresh. I would say enable the addition of Multiple CA rather than…

  5. DirectAccess documentation

Comparing the documentation of DirectAccess for 2012 with other products, even DirectAccess 2008, I see that it lacks some in-depth insights that an Admin needs to be able to deploy and manage the component effectively.
for example, I could not find a TechNet article describing in details, what happens from start to finish when a resource is being accessed through direct access:
    1. how is the NAT64 working? how does NAT64 translates address and which IPv4 address translates to which IPv6 and vice-versa? how does the component come up with those connection security rules in GPOs based on admin input…

  6. Add support for SNMPv3

Is there any thought to updating the built in SNMP agent to support v3 in Windows server 2016, and not just deprecating the existing agent? Currently it seems there is no industry supported standard that is a replacement for SNMP, and until there is it should be added to Windows Server 2016

  7. Add more BGP debug info

    There's no info about:
    - routes that ingress or egress through BGP really,
    - reasons of including/excluding BGP routes in/from main route table.

  9. DnsServer Module cmdlets need a credential parameter

It would be extremely useful if the cmdlets in the DnsServer module had the credential parameter. It's a lot easier to provide the credentials in a variable versus having to wrap the cmdlet in a script block every time you want to run it with different credentials.

  10. DNS Manager should sort IP addresses numerically

In DNS Manager the Data column treats everything as a string so it sorts alphabetically. Instead, it should be smarter and recognize different types of data and sort those numerically. Specifically, it should recognize IPv4 addresses and sort them numerically.

    We could go from:

    To:

    10.0.0.1
    10.0.0.2
    10.0.0.100
    10.0.0.101
    10.0.0.200
    10.0.0.201

  11. Product to Product SPPC (Secure Port & Protocol Comunication) for Server 2017

    Hola,

(if that clear, read until reach bottom of this post)

Just like to ask Microsoft if they could make a secure server to server communication protocol, that use say 44443, that is a strip-down TCP that don't use the 3-hand system (more like secure UDP with error correction). That allows each product to talk to each other, using a PKI, or on-prem ADCS certificate.
But this communication should be base on Control+Data info
were each product can list all the control-command(standards) that it accepts.

What is this for, you ask:

So it will be easy for all products to…

  13. GRE tunnels

Provide the ability to create GRE Tunnels without RRAS.

This is helpful for Azure nodes to do things like multicast where it would otherwise not be possible.

  15. Re-engineer DNS

Recently, I had to switch about 200 records from Dynamic records to Static, because the Zone was set with 20 Min TTL, and I had servers, running on Dynamic DNS. I know that using the console, I can update a record to switch from Dynamic to a static record, but to my surprise, there wasn't an option via powershell :(

Also Powershell doesnt let you manage the TTL or other options in DNS

  16. Provide VLAN extension - L2 over L3 tunneling

A feature (for Windows Server Gateway) that allows tunneling Layer 2 over Layer 3 so to easily extend existing VLANs across Layer 3. This would allow tenants to easily move workloads between clouds without re-IPing.

  17. reengineer the whole DHCP Server

The MMC console based management of windows server is still unchanged since server 2003. These are the things that bother me:

    • Window size is not saved. have to maximize everytime the window is opened

    • Treemenu on the left is collapsed every time the window is opened

    • Menu window on the left is very narrow, have to extend it every time the window is opened

    • Cant edit IP address range exclutions (you have to delete and recreate every time)

    • Cant edit reservations IP address

Following features would be great to have:

    • Right click on a client and copy MAC address (for…

  20. Enable DHCP to send unrequested options.

I thought I had posted this, but apparently not.
Have the ability to force DHCP options down to a client. Right now it seems that the DHCP server only sends options back that are requested by the client. Having the ability to send non-requested options would be awesome. Not so much for Windows clients, but for Mac clients. The Netboot there doesn't request options 66 and 67. But if you send them down (such as the Mac Servers do), then it can boot from those options. If this were implemented, LOTS of Mac Admins would be very happy.
