  1. Online repository for packages

Would be great to have an online repository (always updated) for nano, like apt-get.

  2. Install Nano from WDS / MDT / SCCM

It will be a great idea to allow the installation of this new bare metal OS through the already high use Microsoft Deployment Technologies. This will allow the people to change the setup of these servers when needed and can be highly configurable once and deploy multiple types of systems (Hyper-V / DNS etc) by just change the settings on the deployment system / server.
    Such as:
    - Change the hostname during deployment.
    - Join a Domain during deployment
    - Add Roles / Features during deployment
    - Manageable via already standard methods.
The need to build multiple VHDX / USB…

Thank you for the suggestion. We have a new blog post by Michael Niehaus describing how to use MDT to deploy Nano Server at https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/mniehaus/2017/01/11/deploying-nano-server-using-mdt/.

We don’t have plans to support SCCM at this time.

For WDS support, we are tracking this in a separate UV request at https://windowsserver.uservoice.com/forums/295068-nano-server/suggestions/16661197-wds-services-on-nano-would-be-a-great-thing.

  3. Windows 10 Host

The current Nano Server license agreement seems to focus on server operation only.

Another use case would be to encapsulate a software development environment into a nano container and deploy them onto Windows 10 Pro host machines of a developer. Think about a Vagrant / Docker like setup where the deployed instances contain tools and services required to compile / test a software product.

Its somehow identically to the use case described within "Licensing Windows desktop operating system for use with virtual machines"

    Local Windows Virtual Machines:
"An organization has a group of developers who need to test an
    application…

  5. Error when using Nano Server Image Builder (in FR)

I have a problem when I use this program in order to build a vhd for nanoserver. When I use the region French (France), i got the problem. Everything is right when I try with English (United States).

  6. Implement Invoke-WebRequest

You stripped down Nano Server too far. Invoke-WebRequest is kinda an important part of PowerShell for downloading files to the image in an automated fashion. Please implement it!

  7. Provide a local file/script editor on nano server

Currently there is no way to edit a text file or powershell script on nano server. a text or script editor (at least something like DOS "edit" editor) would be very helpful. currently, one connected to nano server using powershell remoting, if I need to modify any script, it just can't be done and its painful to copy scripts/files over network even for smallest modifications.

We’ve recently added support for the Rename-Computer cmdlet on Nano Server. Now it’s possible to change the machine name for the running OS over PowerShell remoting.

  9. support Invoke-Request (wget) powershell commands with proxy

The Invoke-Request command should support global proxy settings and also should work with proxy credentials. And then work on it that we not get the message: The response content cannot be parsed because the Internet Explorer engine is not available

  10. Support running remote PowerShell commands from Nano Server - i.e. include New-PSSession

Currently, PowerShell in Nano Server has Enter-PSSession and Exit-PSSession. Enter-PSSession is not supported though because you cannot enter a PSSession from another PSSession. I want to be able to use Nano Server as a jump box to administer other systems in a workgroup or domain so I would need the ability to create a PSSession. New-PSession would enable that because you could pass the session object to Invoke-Command. Currently, the only option that exists for performing remote management from a Nano Server are CIM Sessions which are great and allow me to get a lot accomplished but they are obviously…

  11. Reverse Forwarders should be included by default

Unless there is a really compelling technical reason (as opposed to a marketing / product positioning / ideological one), Nano Server should include the Reverse Forwarders by default. The extra disk space is minuscule and not a reason to omit them.

Many applications are going to need the Reverse Forwarders. Not having them universally available creates the potential for a lot of customer dissatisfaction. People will try to use software that needs the forwarders on Nano images without them, and it won't work. Now they've got to go back and rebuild the image. Total waste of time.

Thank you for the feedback. We’ve listened to your feedback and have included the reverse forwarders by default in Nano Server starting with TP5.

  12. Start-Transcript support

Please support PowerShell Transcript noun. Since Nano Server is designed to be managed remotely, it would make it easier to debug scripts executing remotely if the PowerShell transcript capability were supported. Right now, Start-Transcript is not supported, so one can't see the results of simple PowerShell scripts executed remotely without building significant error handling and logging into the script.

  13. make nano smaller

Nano is still 500MB. Yes it is a fraction of 10GB Core uses in a container. BUT it makes using it as userspace inside a container really big.

I think it should be orders of magnitude smaller.

    Competition:
    http://www.alpinelinux.org/about/

How? All packages and functionality within Nano should be fully optional. It should include 0 packages out of the box and have no functionality. I should be able to make the equivlant of a scratch OS and then piecemeal in the components needed for the container.

Thanks for the feedback. Windows Server 2016 now contains package management through PackageManagement (aka OneGet). This has support for a subset of repros in Nano in TP4.

    Have you looked at:

  15. multipathio

We have Fibre Channel storage (Netapp), so we cant use Nano server as HyperV as it doesnt support multipathio. Can you please add support for multipathio?

If this is already planned, when is this scheduled for?

  18. Support System.Management.Automation

According to given information regarding Windows Nano Server, it does not contain full .NET Framework, but .NET Core.

.NET libraries contained in the Core are listed here. Some are complete, some are not. But what I don't understand is that System.Management.Automation is missing from the list entirely.

This library is the one used to use PowerShell cmdlets in .NET applications. Considering how important PowerShell is today for sysadmins in particular, this omission in light of the Nano Server seems simply weird. So does this mean functionality provided by System.Management.Automation is not available in Windows Nano Server?

    When we deploy .NET…

  20. Nano server console to show/change network information

Similar to ESXi, Nano server needs a text based console option to show/change network information. The default 'console' screen should show FDQN and IP address. There should also be a text based option to reboot/shutdown the hosts. This is basic control of a nano server that should NOT be relegated to remote management tools.
