  1. Design Change Request - Adding Service SID in Cluster Access Permission only if when the service is installed

The following Service SIDs are added in Cluster Access Permission in every Windows Server 2016 and 2019 Failover Cluster during cluster setup:

    S-1-5-80-1116079416-1731319938-396994126-3102800949-670876498 corresponds to NT SERVICE\StorageReplica
    S-1-5-80-1071656157-3689046577-4105049408-574495319-1522408424 corresponds to NT SERVICE\NfsService
    S-1-5-80-4130899010-3337817248-2959896732-3640118089-1866760602 corresponds to NT SERVICE\VmHostAgent

If a failover cluster doesn't have the services installed, those Service SID will be listed in Cluster Access Permission as unresolved SIDs.

This DCR is to ask Microsoft Product team to change the behavior, so that Service SIDs will only be added in Cluster Access Permission when the service is installed.

  2. Make WSSD two cluster licensing available in Windows Server Standard

Currently Microsoft requires Windows Datacenter edition licensing for a WSSD cluster. Its even advertised as an affordable solution under $10k for the hardware for branch offices. But its not economical when you need to add Windows Datacenter licensing (we only need to run 4 VMs with storage spaces direct) which adds another $25k NZD per year...!

Essentially including 2-3 node WSSD allowances in Windows Server Standard licensing will mean we don't need to look at alternatives such as VMware, or Starwind. Might as well just purchase a small SAN again?!

  4. Fill in all of the missing pieces and do some consistency checking of published documentation

Find a person in Microsoft (sure you have one or two people working there) that can be targeted at validating all the contradictions held in documentation that you continually post as valid links in later articles. Posting a Ned Pyle video from several years ago as a valid current description surrounding Storage Replica when it directly contradicts current MS documentation is very lazy.

Further to this, while I realise that for the past 30 years MS staff only want to work on the 'latest greatest' release, there used to be a commitment to the technical community that still support your…

  5. Cluster creation should support LAGs

When trying to create a new HCI cluster, I can't get past 'edit adapter properties' as it detects the LAG member interfaces as not having unique IP addresses.

  7. Feature Request - Add new parameter to New-Cluster and Add-ClusterNode cmdlet to ignore ICMP/Ping validation

When creating a cluster or adding a new cluster node using ClusAdmin.msc or Powershell (New-Cluster, Add-ClusterNode), there is a requirement that ICMP/Ping validation to the server(s) must be successful. If ICMP/Ping traffic is blocked to the server(s), the cluster cannot be created, or the server cannot be added as cluster node.

To support customers setting up cluster nodes in different datacenters with ICMP/Ping traffic blocked, please consider adding a new parameter to ignore ICMP/Ping validation in New-Cluster and Add-ClusterNode cmdlets in currently supported Failover Cluster versions.

  8. New VM in Cluster creating unnecessary "Hyper-V" in folder path

When creating a new VM from the Failover Cluster it adds a "hyper-v" folder to the end of the path which is unnessasary.

The Path is set to "C:\ClusterStorage\VMStorage\BuildServers"

    so it becomes "C:\ClusterStorage\VMStorage\BuildServers\Hyper-V\Server1".

but it would be better if it was

    "C:\ClusterStorage\VMStorage\BuildServers\Server1".

  9. cannot ping node server‘s virtual ip

Based on the different subnets, I could ping node local ip, but couldn't ping node server's virtual ip. From my switch, I found the arp cache table, it shows the local ip and mac address, the virtual ip and mac address couldn't write in arp cache table except I manually trigger it on my node server, but the network adapter shows these ip addresses and mac address normally.

  11. Allow for Powershell Generic Script Resources on WSFC

Please build Powershell support for WSFC generic script resources. VBS is no longer a viable, nor easy way to program these. Shouldn't be too hard :)

  12. Node fairness requires customizable time interval

Currently, the interval for “AutoBalancing” with "Node Fairness" is non-configurable and will happen every 30 minutes.

I would like to see a way to customize the time interval and also provide a way to (manualy) invoke the balancing mechanism.

  13. Create a Hyper-V Cluster without AD

It's very important create hyper-v cluster without AD dependencies. For example you could use certificates to validate each node (like Hyper-V Replica between two hosts in workgroup)

  14. Cluster Aware Updates ignore Daylight Savings Time

On Server 2012 R2 CAU scheduling "moved" one hour when Europe switched to Daylight Savings time (or rather CAU scheduling ignored DST). This impacted planned maintenance windows and had to be manually adjusted.

Possible useful fix: Default all scheduling to UTC.

  15. Storage Spaces Direct should be configurable from Failover Cluster Manager UI

PowerShell and SCVMM management are not sufficient for management - this feature should be 100% configurable from Failover Cluster Manager UI (cluadmin.exe)

  16. Make CAU not just Cluster Aware but "Any Microsoft Product" aware

CAU is just cluster-aware. When used on a Hyper-V Cluster, it's not aware of Hyper-V Replicas, which will fail on Node-reboot. When used on an Exchange DAG, it's not DAG-aware, causing to reboot the Node bringing an online Database simply offline!. I was totally depressed and disappointed to find that out! CAU should be aware of at least any Microsoft Product running on top of it. Similarly, it could be extended to support RDS-Farms/RDS-Gateway-Farms/RDS-Broker-Farms, etc. If not out of the box, perhaps with a plugin-module-model, which gets installed when CAU gets deployed, evaluating what's running on the Node it gets…

  17. "Move Virtual Machine Storage" in Failover Cluster Manager UI needs enhancements for SMB3 / SoFS / Storage Space Direct

The "Move Virtual Machine Storage" capability in the Failover Cluster Manager UI is really useful, but it needs a few simple things to make it easier to manage storage and also to transfer between storage topologies:
    1. Ability to create FOLDERS - not just shares
    2. Ability to REFRESH the view so that the dialog does not need to be closed
    3. Ability to view permissions of SMB3 shares

  18. Cluster Validation should keep CSV disks online

Cluster Validation should keep CSV disks online somehow - there should be a way for me to run every validation test - including storage - without bringing my Hyper-V workload offline. I like the Scale Out File Server but I want validation to work seamlessly when I am only using local CSV.

  19. Hyper-V Storage clustering

It would be great if there would be a option to automate the load balancing of the storage: space load balancing among datastore within a datastore cluster, I/O load balancing and also initial placement for the virtual disks, some thing that Storage DRS does in VMware.

  20. Better GUI for Creating Cloud Witness

Currently the Cloud witness needs storag account name and key.
But Why not taking the GUI options from SQL and make this selectable connect to the azure subscription and from there create or select the storage account.

Or make an advanced option that does the simple key input and the other by a GUI as SQL uses to create Azure VM's
