Clustering

  1. Enable firewall rules for cluster automatically when Cluster role installed

When Hyper-V is installed, firewall rules are automatically enabled. When cluster role is installed, you have to do this manually...

  2. [WSFC - CNO] ::: Provision to change the ManagementPointNetworkType of an existing Cluster i.e. between Singleton or Distributed

It’s about making an enhancement on the new feature ManagementPointNetworkType introduced in RS3 which will improve Cluster Connectivity from the behavior what we see today.

History: Until RS3, this wasn’t configurable & the cluster’s CNO will be what’s created using MPNT as Singleton. RS3 onwards this can be set as Distributed.
    You’ll ask: What's the difference?
A CNO of type Singleton needs an IP address while the Distributed ones don’t. This is a boon for the AZURE based WSFC deployments, which are currently using 169.254.x.y and are useless for any remote connections or anything but taking space in AD otherwise…

  3. Manage failover cluster VM replication using Powershell.

Currently even if VMs are created and managed in Failover Cluster Manager, and the GUI supports managing VM replication, there is no corresponding Powershell commands to manage at the Cluster level. Therefore you need to call each host server to initiate a replica failover.

It would be great to be able to use Powershell to manage VM replication for all VMs in the cluster with one script. This would be especially useful for cluster to cluster VM replication where the VMs can move around from host to host.

  4. Option to disable CAU role failback

When CAU resume a cluster node after maintenance, it always moves roles back to that node. On a Hyper-V cluster, this requires live migrating VMs back. In some cases, on a heavily loaded cluster, this interferes with the ability to live migrate VMs off of the next node being put into maintenance.

Having an option in CAU to disable role failback would prevent this.

  5. Publish documentation regarding SOFS share rebalancing behavior and SMB witness protocol involvement in SOFS operations

Right now this https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/josebda/2013/10/30/automatic-smb-scale-out-rebalancing-in-windows-server-2012-r2/ is the only documentation explaining something about SOFS share rebalancing behavior, but it doesn't explain how it works. How SOFS exactly detecting share types and how SMB witness protocol is involved in it.
I had a case with CSS opened about problem with SOFS ( https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/787bd5b7-31d6-4450-b9b5-dfefb6c79a1a/hyperv-over-smb3-problem?forum=winserverfiles ), but they cannot get any documentation either.

We are stopping using SOFS and reverting back to File Server in failover cluster and not recommending anyone to use SOFS because CSS cannot help with problems with it nor does they have documentation to do their work.

  6. Manage unclustered Servers at once

When several unclustered Servers have been added to the WebAdmin, it would be practical to be able to manage several Containers at once (e.g. install Updates and restart 100 Containers with one Command; distribute files across Servers; change Firewall Settings globally)

  7. Failover Cluster Manager should should storage Migration progress

Storage Migration shows progress percentage in the Hyper-V Manager, but not in FCM, Showing a progress in FCM makes sense.

  8. Automatic consistent naming of CSV object and ClusterStorage path

When you rename a CSV object for descriptive purposes, it should plumb that name all the way down automatically to the file system at c:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 and change the corresponding volume name to match the name of the CSV. This is important because you could have many CSV with different I/O patterns in S2D cluster. And knowing which folder to create the VHDX file in for I/O purposes is important because we have to specify a path in the new-vhd command.

  9. Telemetry Catch all service Windows server 2016

As Telemetry is important to Microsoft and not all servers are connected to the internet. Handy would be if there is a catch all services like the old days. With WER Windows Error Reporting and Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program redirect all info to a catch all server log this in a DB and change company name and then send to Microsoft.

  10. rolling upgrade support for 2008 r2 cluster

I seen that there will be a rolling upgrade feature with 2016 that will support upgrading a windows 2012 r2 cluster to 2016 with no downtime. Could this functionality be extended to include upgrades from 2008 r2 clusters?

  12. Provide a UI for Anti-Affinity ClassNames (AACN)

We are missing a simple UI from the Failover Cluster Manager console to identify VMs that should not be hosted on the same cluster node. Preferably with a drop-down (of existing AACN) to avoid typo’s when entering AACN. I consider this basic functionality which should be exposed in the UI.

  13. Windows Containers cluster options

Add an column or place in the Summary a tag this VM has xx Containers. So you can take care of this VM when doing a failover/LM or set special options. Like the replication column

  14. Cluster Patchmanagement

i think its a good wish to create intelligence for Patchmanagement for Cluster Ressources. Example Hyper-V Hosts.
If you have 4 or 5 Hosts with a specified Patchlevel. And if you want to add a new Host to Cluster. You must activate CAU or something else. CAU checks all Host and every Host must go to Maintanance Mode. I think its better when Host will check if updates needed then put Host in MT. If not leave these Host go to next.
So Patchmanagement will be fasterMode. I think its better when Host will check if updates needed then put…

  15. Subfolder Cluster Roles with ACL

AS the Cluster Sizes are getting bigger the Roles list are getting longer. And yes you can make Querys for better listing. But with Subfoldering the roles and the option with and Access list on this would be great.

  16. More information in the Failover Cluster Manager

Make the Roles listing bar more flexible with more options, currently there is name, status, owner, but as the measurement is all ready there Why not the used IOPS and other options as the querys but than listed behind the roles information tab

  18. Allow for a more robust configurations

    For example:

    *) A/A groups.

*) "Not" dependency for resources that should avoid being on the same node.

*) Dependency between clusters or groups.

  19. Allow SoFS clusters to turn on and function without the need to first see AD.

This would allow for running an entire domain infrastructure virtually via Hyper-V over SMB without having to worry about storing a DC on storage that doesn't require AD to turn on and function or having to maintain a physical DC. This is the only issue keeping me from totally replacing my SAN infrastructure with a SoFS cluster. In regards to VM VHDs, the only ones that I have remaining on my original SAN devices are those of my DCs.
