Provide full powershell integration for patching
There should full powershell integration for both WSUS and Server Side WU Client. This would enable scenarios such as post reboot checks for additional patches and mass patching automation.
It would also allow for things like managing small server deployments that don't have WSUS by being able to use remote powershell to query the patches currently installed on servers, check for available patches and then tell them to remediate and reboot if required.
Currently these can be done mostly through WMI and customer powershell scripts that wrap around these, but it really needs proper integration.
Having powershell to query required…148 votes -

Support to boot from SD Card
It's about time that Windows Server (fully licensed product and Hyper-V Server) offered support for customers (not just OEMs) to deploy Hyper-V hosts and Windows Serverson SD cards. I have talked to the OEMs and they want it too. The h/w is already there for vSphere - fault tolerant on-board dual card readers. This will reduce costs of hosts and make for faster & easier deployment.

Fewer restarts for updates
There should be fewer restarts for updates. Especially for storage servers and network routers it's a hassle to reboot.
Clustering all relevant servers is too much a hassle.

Official tool to search for newest patches related to Server Role
It would be great to have tool, where I could search for newest patches which are usually not released to Windows Update. So before calling support I could just validate my server if it has all components up-to-date. Or if there is a fix for certain server component.

Windows server should NOT decide when to reboot for windows updates!
we have designated maintenance windows for such things! It the OS decides i don't use the server at 09:00 and reboots for pending updates then there will be lots of upset people!
We generally install updates when we can then do the reboots in the maintenance window (as it's quite small on some servers)56 votes -

Update KB4057903 has a bug
Exchage within a Hyper-V VM with Windows Server 2012 r2: Update KB4057903 leads to an almost unresponsive server. I could reproduce the behaviour twice by deinstalling the update. Please, provide a new version of KB4057903 without the bug. Thanks.

Fix Windows updates!
Does anyone else out there feel the same as I do about Microsoft and their completely broken update system.
I am at my wits end with these huge cumulative updates that just fail 90% of the time on every Server and Windows 10 PC. I have to spend so much time manually installing these updates and it is got to the point where I am beginning to really hate Microsoft! I used to be a loyal fan of their tech but my patience is now at an all time low.
Sort it Microsoft, tell your update team that they have…

FIX the Windows Update Log issues with Windows 10 and Server 2016
Include al necessary symbol files and updates to base OS and current updates. Many environments do not allow server access (and in some instances workstation access) to the internet to update symbol files as needed. I have tried every posted articles suggestions on getting the windows update log into useful, understandable English, with the only success being to reimage my windows 10 Enterprise desktop. I refuse to do so with my domain 2016 servers!

Fix Windows Updates on Server 2016
Please fix Windows Updates on Server 2016 to allow more control in search and installing updates, similar to previous Windows Server versions. The inability to control which updates can be applied is outrageous! The ability for updates to install without any control is mind boggeling. FIX THIS AT ONCE!!!

URGENT: Seperate Category for Preview Update Rollups needed!
Actually it is not really possible to use automatic acknowledgement rules without acknowledgeing any Preview security or preview feature upates for Windows 7, 8.1 etc.
Please put them a seperate WSUS Category e.g. preview rollups so that an effective testing can be made with rulesets and a test group of computers.

Resume monthly Windows Update rollup releases for Windows 2012R2
The monthly Windows Update rollup releases greatly sped up creating a machine from scratch, upgrading an image to latest, and just patching machines. These rollups ceased shipping in December 2014. There has been no rollup release in over 14 months for the current latest production server OS from Microsoft.
This translates to over a hundred updates (about 150 past the last rollup) and a few reboots, multiple ngen passes for .Net that aren't needed. Only the last of these time-costly operations needs to run, a handy side-effect the rollup has.
Instead on thousands of tens of thousands of sysadmins spending…

make "scheduled install day/time" GPO setting work for server 2016
the "Scheduled install day" and "scheduled install time" group policy settings under "computer/administrative templates/windows components/windows update/configure automatic updates" are being ignored by server 2016 in favor of "active hours." having active hours on servers is utterly ridiculous. I need certain servers to reboot in a certain order only on Saturday nights.

Hotfix checking for roles you are running on server
Add an option to check what hotfixes (in addition to normal updates) are available for server roles that are running. Something like now manually checking against HyperV and clustering available HotFix list.
