  1. Windows server should NOT decide when to reboot for windows updates!

we have designated maintenance windows for such things! It the OS decides i don't use the server at 09:00 and reboots for pending updates then there will be lots of upset people!
We generally install updates when we can then do the reboots in the maintenance window (as it's quite small on some servers)

  2. Windows Update - Restart services not full system

An update, security patch or otherwise should only require a restart of a service where possible not require an entire system restart for every update.

  4. Fewer restarts for updates

There should be fewer restarts for updates. Especially for storage servers and network routers it's a hassle to reboot.

Clustering all relevant servers is too much a hassle.

  5. Official tool to search for newest patches related to Server Role

It would be great to have tool, where I could search for newest patches which are usually not released to Windows Update. So before calling support I could just validate my server if it has all components up-to-date. Or if there is a fix for certain server component.

  7. Enable custom schedules in Windows update configuration

Daily and Weekly schedules do not offer enough flexibility to large organizations trying to update large numbers of systems. Please add support for monthly schedules.

  8. Provide search option in 'Add Server Roles and Features' wizard

When selecting server roles and (specially features that is a long list and nested), provide an option to search for them. it will help to quickly find required roles/features for installation/uninstallation.

  9. Provide Cluster Aware Updating functionality for normal Servers

CAU is a pretty handy tool for patching clusters. It would be great to have this automated and centralized patching functionality also for non clustered windows servers!

  12. More that "Preparing" in Server 2016

When patching Windows Server 2016 (maybe 10 as well) it always says "Preparing to install". Doesn't matter if it's checking for updates, downloading updates, or installing updates. It always shows "Preparing to install". Right now I'm patching three new Server 2016 VM Templates and they all show "Preparing to install updates xx%".

Can we please go back to the Win2012 and previous messages that showed what was actually being done, not what we're preparing for?

  13. Update KB4057903 has a bug

Exchage within a Hyper-V VM with Windows Server 2012 r2: Update KB4057903 leads to an almost unresponsive server. I could reproduce the behaviour twice by deinstalling the update. Please, provide a new version of KB4057903 without the bug. Thanks.

  14. import updates server 2016

Please fix the broken link when importing updates into WSUS in Server 2016 from the update catalog.

The issue is that the link contains a protocol version 1.20 at the end but the correct version is 1.80!

  15. Update WSUS to allow Azure Active Directory Authentication

Can WSUS be updated to use Azure Active Directory Authentication in addition to Windows Integrated? I'd love to be able to offload the WSUS database into the Azure Cloud Database As A Service - SQL Database offering.

As an added bonus, it would also be great if it could also use Azure's new 'Managed Identity Provider' so that, if I have WSUS hosted on an Azure VM, it can just grab needed authorizations through there.

  16. Provide new Update KB4072650 and 4057903 or scrap it alltogether

The server works fine without the update. So why do we need it??

  17. installation of kb4038777 on 2008 R2 domain controllers causes LDAP to break for certain applications.

after much troubleshooting this morning, we were forced to uninstall kb4038777 on our 2008 r2 domain controllers and restart them. it appears LDAP authentication is failing over port 389 for a handful of our applications, as well as our production mailarchiva instance.

was curious if anyone else had seen / experienced similar.

  18. KB4035036 - .NET Preview August 2017 for .NET 4.6.1 installs .NET 4.7 DLLs

    Hi All,

it looks like that ndp46-kb4033990-x64 one of the Updates included in
    KB4035036-August 2017 Preview of the Quality Rollups for the .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, and 4.7 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/4035036)

patches the wrong .NET 4.6.1 DLLs on a Windows 2008 R2 Server.

Registry sill says .NET 4.6.1 (394271) is installed, but

the new patched files have a signature from 4.7.
For e.g: mscorlib.dll has after the patch 4.7.2106.0.

There a some third-party products, that have problems with .NET 4.7, like OpenEdge Progress.(https://knowledgebase.progress.com/articles/Article/gui-net-application-crashes-after-net-upgrade-to-4-7).

    And after…

  19. Support WsusContent folder dedup in Server OS.

It sure would be nice if the WsusContent folder would work with the dedup in Server OS. With Express Updates enabled for Windows 10 deltas this folder grows and grows. Performing a few test cases dedup saves 50% or more however it breaks WSUS.

  20. NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOffUsers - Windows Server OS

Considering the server availability, we administrators are not getting downtime as we desired. So, Microsoft should give the support for server OS to prevent the reboot the server in logged-off mode after windows update installation. I have a suggestion that I'm giving below. If it is possible, it is very helpful to the world of Windows administrators. Add the registry value in server at least in all available server operating systems

    [HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

    "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOffUsers"=dword:00000001
